Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 11, Issue 9b
April 10, 2007
Aaaand we're back. I know, it's been...hours!
And I have to rub my eyes and make sure I'm reading that counter on
Burningman.com correctly ....ulp. Yep. 144 days until Burning Man.
That's what's known as a gross, which is a lot when you're counting
bottle rockets, but not very many when you're counting days until we
burn. Whoa.
And there is SO much going on in this, the year of the Green Man. You've
just seen the art grants (wow, right?) - but that's just the tip of the
iceberg! Folks, say hello to this weekend's OPEN HOUSE/GREEN HOUSE/BEACH
HOUSE event in San Francisco - your chance to plug in and get involved
with building Black Rock City this year, AND to participate in some wild
and wooly mindshare with hundreds of other folks seeking and sharing new
ways to Green the Burn...PLUS the launch of the amazing Ocean Beach Fire
Pits later that night to warm up the American coastline with Burning Man
art! That's the very first item below - can you believe all that good
stuff in just one day? Don't miss out.
But that's not all that's going on; April, it seems, is an incredibly
busy month on the proverbial Big Burning Calendar, with the start of
walk-in ticket outlet sales (new - even more outlets!), projects gearing
up (check out Participate! for just a few), and super-smoking-hot
Regional and Events/Happenings sections for you to peruse. We're
especially eager to share the news of TOAST! the Arizona burn - just
FIVE DAYS left to get those tix.... and DARK SKIES - SINGULARITY, the
Southwest Regional Burn near Las Vegas...just to name a few...
Washington DC gets in on the action with a Burning Man film fest this
month too...there's too much going on out there to do it justice with
just one paragraph, so check out all the happenings below!
Also, the Playa Restoration folks took a minute to share with you their
tricks and tools of the trade, AND we've got a friendly reminder about
Plants at Burning Man. PLUS MORE. Seriously. In short, a supremely
news-packed second half of this week's JRS.
BUT before you move to that....
Remember in JRS V11:#8 when we told you to save the date for May 5? On
that day, Burners Without Borders (and that means you, even if you don't
know it yet!) will share the second annual Cinco De Playa Worldwide
Beach/Park Cleanup Day. Burners will be joining together in their home
towns to conduct organized beach and park cleanups - synchronized with
others all over the world! BWB's first Cinco De Playa last year cleaned
up beaches in five states and three continents; this year, by partnering
with the regional network, we want to reach even farther.
Here's how you can take part in this worldwide event: contact your local
regional, if you have one, to check if there's a beach or park cleanup
already underway in your area. (Not sure if you have a regional? Visit
regionals.burningman.com .) So far we've heard tell of several
planned cleanups (and of course a lot of fun to go along with the work),
from Coney Island in NY, to Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, to a Cincinatti
riverfront -- lots of Regional groups have taken up the charge and are
planning to participate in this fun civic event.
If your region HASN'T planned anything yet, maybe YOU know a perfect
local spot that can use some attention, and you can share it with your
regional and head up a local effort. All you need is some trash bags and
an announcement on your local list to get the fire started. Don't have a
regional? Don't let that stop you! Organize your friends and campmates
and let us know what you're up to.
Check out the page at
www.burnerswithoutborders.org/iss...-ups
for more information on this worldwide collaborative event...we'll look
forward to hearing about yours!
Lastly, please remember, if you've got an item for the Jack Rabbit, read
the footer of this newsletter for how to submit, or how to unsubscribe.
Just replying to this email is a good way to get lost in the shuffle!

BURNING MAN OPEN HOUSE, GREEN HOUSE & BEACH HOUSE 4.14.07 SF, CA
Three Burner-ific Events in One Radically Fun Day!
OPEN HOUSE: Learn How To Help Create Black Rock City
GREEN HOUSE: Find Out How to Green the Burn and the World
BEACH HOUSE: Inaugurate the New Ocean Beach Burn Platforms
Saturday April 14, 11AM to 3PM - Revised Time
Burning Man Headquarters - 1900 3rd St. @ 16th, SF
Then off to Ocean Beach for the 7PM Fire (Artists' fire pits to be
dedicated at stairwells 15-21. Meet at Stairwell 18 to start)
Free, of course! Leave no trace.
In celebration of this year's theme "the Green Man", our annual Burning
Man Open House and Volunteer Recruitment Day will feature a major Green
House theme to help you green your burn!
As in prior years, this is your chance to meet the coordinators of our
City, and learn how you can become one of the 3,000+ volunteers that
create it. This year, we're adding a complete green fair, with an
eco-fashion show, alternative energy demonstrations and presentations, a
'trashion' workshop, solar cooking, green art, and a whole lot more!
Even our annual pot luck and BBQ social will be earth-friendly.
THEN....it all began at the beach, so after the event, we'll all head to
Ocean Beach to fire up the new burn platforms!! What burn platforms,
you ask? Maybe you missed:
sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi
(Don't forget, the Burn Platform project STILL NEEDS HELP:
www.burnerswithoutborders.org/glo...each
)
Come enjoy the OPEN HOUSE/GREEN HOUSE/BEACH HOUSE! Plan to spend the
entire day at BMHQ, because like the playa, there will be a LOT going
on! Here's just a sampling:
- Solar Stage - Biofuels presentations, Green Man Puppet Performance,
Inconvenient Truth Talk, the Tri-clops Monstrosity Band, and more!
- Green pot luck - eat lunch earth-friendly: BYO reusable or composting
cups, plates, and utensils, along with organic food to share. (Yep, we
compost here at BMHQ, and use biodegradable plates and cups! Please use
the green bins!)
11AM-12PM: How to be a green burner - eco-workshops, presentations, and
demonstrations on the solar powered stage plus green vehicles,
eco-carnival, solar ovens, biodiesel distillation, grey water works,
green art and the Solar Death Ray 2000!
12-3PM: Volunteer resource tables open - meet the volunteer coordinators
from over 20 departments that organize our creative chaos into our city.
Ask them anything...like how their department is going green! From
Greeters to Artery to DPW to Rangers to Playa Info to DMV to the Geek
Squad, we fuel our city on participation. WE need YOU to be part of WE
to make the dream real! You'll never be the same...
- Ongoing green demonstrations indoors and out: Check out the Trashion
Bee, the Friends of Black Rock, green lighting and videos, displays on
how to be green, the National LNT traveling trainers - even a
hydrogen-fueled rocket! Bring old sheets, socks, pants, sweaters, shirts
and swatches to create a MOOP bag or playa outfit at the Bee.
- TICKETS: get the last of the $250 TICKETS! Burning Man 2007's $250
tickets are nearly sold out -- but you can buy them during the Open
House in person from MeanBean. Just look for the Boy Scout! Cash only.
2PM: Eco-fashion show - get your trashion on the stage, or be trashy
playarazzi!!!
THEN....
3PM: Leave no trace at BMHQ. Head toward Ocean Beach...consider meeting
at the Beach Chalet back patio for cocktails and a bite to eat.
7 PM - OCEAN BEACH: Cruise over to the Burn Platform inauguration at
Ocean Beach and celebrate the installation of these incredible pieces of
Burning Man art right here in San Francisco!
We've been trusted with this beach -- PLEASE treat it as well as you
would the OTHER playa. Since the Park Service is not requiring permits
for this large gathering, there will be Park Rangers present. ** Please
leave alcohol/glass behind.** Bring some wood and enjoy the fire!
HELP WITH THE BIG DAY...roles are open if you'd like to lend a hand!
Write kachinakatrina@burningman.com:
1. Table & share resources for being a green burner and sign people up
for info or volunteering
2. Stage hands
3. Clean up
4. Set-up (show up Friday, and 9am day of event)
5. Signage- all around & eco-retrofitted RV/ Busses
April 14th is a day of climate change action/awareness events across the
country, so don't be a spectator - become a participant! It's a great
way to meet everyone, become more connected to the Burning Man
community, and preserve the planet. Why not start by leaving your car at
home? BMHQ is served by the NEW SF Muni T-THIRD streetcar service,
Mariposa Street stop. (Scheduled to open April 7th - see

ARE YOU A GEEK or ARTIST WHO BRINGS WIRELESS/'NET TECHNOLOGY TO THE PLAYA?
If you are planning a largescale technological project, have an art
project that absolutely requires Internet connectivity, or will be
beaming any sort of bits
and bytes into the airwaves above the playa, you are cordially invited
and strongly requested to participate at the Burning Man Technology
Department will be hosting our second Playa Wireless Summit on April 12,
2007. PLEASE RSVP by responding to this post at
playatech@burningman.com. If you're not in the area, write to us for
info on how to dial in.
Burning Man HQ: www.burningman.com/officedirections
When we say "technology", we don't mean just a laptop to check your
email once during the week when you randomly hop on the Wifi cloud
provided by the good folks at Internet at Burning Man. We're talking
about the kind of geek who brings a whole car full of technology and
towers and beams bits and bytes all over the playa and into the universe.
Well, from one geek to another... we all know that these bits and
bytes that we are beaming all over the playa will play a lot nicer
with each other -- and get to where they are supposed to be going -- if we
all talk about what we are planning to do and work together ahead of
time. Heck, we may even be able to help each other out a bit on our
projects!
Please let us know the nature of your project, and feel free to get as
geeky as you wannabe - we'll get it. You'll be invited to attend the
Summit where we'll talk geek talk and compare the size of our towers and
other fun
things like that.
Once again, if you are bringing "heavy geekery" like repeaters and
towers, or you have a project that MUST have an Internet connection,
we need to hear from you.
Send us a ping at playatech@burningman.com .
Thanks!

REMINDER: REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE FOR BURNERS LOST
Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of
our community who have passed away each year. We would like to carry on
this tradition and honor those who have affected our Burning experiences
and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to
you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you
feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name,
exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address (use
REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE in the subject line):

(please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this JRS)
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man from Monday (August
27th) through Friday (August 31st).

PLAYA RESTORATION TEACHES YOU THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE
There is an Art to Leaving No Trace. Here are some helpful hints at how
to keep the Black Rock Desert beautiful: a quick internet search for
these inexpensive tools will have you well on your way to leaving no
environmental impact. Remember, restoring the Playa is a Black Rock
Citywide Effort - so pass on the knowledge!
1.) MAGNET SWEEPERS!!! (aka Magnet Rakes)
Do you have any idea how much metal is found on the playa? Whether
you're staking your tent down, building a theme camp or art
installation, or just straight up welding and cutting metal, make your
life easier by using a Magnet Sweeper! All you have to do is roll them
over your work area, listen as the magnet pulls the loose metal off of
the playa, and then discard the metal in the trash using the release
lever. Simple and inexpensive. Every burner should have one.
2.) RAKES (or better yet LANDSCAPE RAKES)
Dust storms happen, dunes build up very quickly and you could find
yourself on your hands and knees using your bare hands sifting for
things that might well turn into MOOP. Instead, use a rake, and pull the
MOOP out. Landscape rakes are wider, can catch more MOOP, and can comb
through more area. You can use the back end of the rake to cut down the
size of the dune and pull it flat.
3.) PUSHBROOMS
That dune that you're standing on that built up on the site of your art
installation or camp... yeah, that's "leaving a trace". The dune will
just get bigger and bigger as it attracts more dust and catches MOOP.
When the winter rains come, that dune will just solidify into a big dune
as hard as the playa surface itself -- which will suck for anyone using
the playa, including us. Do your best and knock it down with a
pushbroom. Have a few on hand and watch how easy it is to restore the
flatest real estate in the Black Rock Desert.
4.) SHOVELS
Got a disaster? Use a shovel. Dump it into a container. Haul it away.
Leave No Trace. Got a dune? Use a shovel. Spread it out. Flatten it.
Leave No Trace.
Got a hole? Use a shovel. Fill it. Leave No Trace. Useful, no?
5.) VICE GRIPS
Okay, so you were a little excessive with the rebar and now you can't
get it out of the ground. Do it the DPW Way and get some Vice Grips
around that sucker. Give it a couple of rotations to loosen up the dirt
around the rebar and then... TWIST back and forth vigorously while
pulling upward (lift with the legs, Hercules, not your back). The dirt
will act as bearings, working that rebar free of the playa.
6.) METAL TRASH CANS
For containing and hauling ash and debris.

A REMINDER ABOUT PLANTS AT BURNING MAN
Given the 2007 GREEN MAN theme, you might be tempted to bring plants to
our event in the Black Rock Desert.
Don't.
Remember: Burning Man is probably the largest "Leave No Trace" event in
the world.
Live plants die on the playa. Ask anyone that has brought them. They
always make a mess. In our history. participants who have brought in
plants, sod, trees, or cut palm fronds have created a MOOP (Matter Out
of Place) disaster. Every site that has used them in any quantity has
cost themselves (or WORSE, the Playa Restoration crew) days and days of
work post-event.
The Gate, Earth Guardians and DPW Playa Restoration Crew are highly
sensitized to the issue, and keep a close eye on everything that enters
our city. If you bring plants, they will stop you at the gate or come
and find you. They have been known to incinerate projects before they
were even begun.
For this reason we have long banned live plants on the playa. No change
to our policy here -- we just want to restate things clearly given our
2007 Green Man theme.
Please support us in this effort. Help us keep the clean up crew sane!
Artificial plants work just as well and look better with a quick
watering. Better yet, construct your own plants and trees from recycled
materials that won't cause MOOP in desert high winds.
Leave your live plants behind. Leave behind ANYTHING that will break up
and/or blow away in the wind, living or dead (trees, twigs, loose paper,
palm fronds, etc.)!
Any comments about Burning Man's live plant ban can be addressed to
questions@burningman.com

Where: The magickal land of Ozark Avalon, Boonville, Missouri
When: May 3-6, 2007
Midwest Burners is a Burning Man inspired social and recreational
association. Our community radiates out from the Kansas City area. Many
InterFuse participants come from the Kansas City and St. Louis areas,
since InterFuse is primarily a collaboration between these two
communities. However, we encourage any other Burners, especially those
in the Midwest, to come co-create the InterFuse experience. Of course,
you don't need to be a previous Burner to attend this event. The goal of
InterFuse is to unite the scattered Burners and pre-Burners of the
Midwest in the flames of this celebration of Art, Fire, and Life -
further spreading the unique Burning Experience through the region.
Theme: The Afterlife? theme is a meditation on the interplay of Life and
Death. The theme involves a question mark as a symbol of the questions
this theme poses, such as: Is there an afterlife? If so, what will it be
like? How does our conception (or lack of conception) of the Afterlife
affect our lives now? InterFuse 2007 is your opportunity to express your
ideas of the Afterlife OR Life without an Afterlife. Welcome all you
mortals!
Tickets:. All tickets are $25 and are PRE-SALES only. Tickets are on
sale now until Midnight, April 20, 2007.
Only Midwest Burners Association members and their guests may
participate in InterFuse. Membership is free and simple. Please visit
www.midwestburners.com for more information on membership and
InterFuse.

RENO - SUPER FUN FUNDRAISER EVENT "IN SPACE"!! 4/14 Reno, NV
As we Reno-Compress for our time on the playa this year,
Cosmo-Naughties of many ages and camps will descend upon the humble burg
of Reno, Nevada. There, the launch codes will be entered for an evening
of space dance and electronica chill music, interactive art, light
shows, mini-theme camps, and friendly people. But when the celebration
marks something as extraordinary as the dawn of human spaceflight,
expect a HUGE party...IN SPACE!!! This is a fund raiser for Reno-based
Burning Man theme camps Club Verboten, Robotronia, and the new Labwerks
satellite camp of Apokiliptika.
We're also looking for more burners that want to set up their own
mini-theme camps inside the huge venue. You don't have to have a
"space" theme, but it will be like launching your theme camp... IN
SPACE! If you want to downsize your camp for this event or have always
wanted to do a theme camp but want to start small, here's a great
opportunity. To encourage interaction and visitors to your little spot
in the cosmos, we ask you to offer some kind of finger food. It's not a
pot luck, just want to make sure nobody's blood sugar is entirely from
alcohol.
Where: Stoneys @ 71 S. Wells Ave. Reno, Nevada.
When: Saturday, April 14, 9:00 PM
Age: 21+
Contribution: $10 at the launch gantry.

(Don't forget, the Burn Platform project STILL NEEDS HELP:
www.burnerswithoutborders.org/glo...each
)
2. Stage hands

The Burning Band is forming a NEW camp for 2007. We will be joining with
the newly formed Black Rock Philharmonic to live and perform at

Yes, we want to expand our musical repertoire to play all kinds of

swing, ska and scat, classical and classless? Now is your chance! We

We need art cars that resemble boats or ships to aid us in

INTERFUSE: THE MIDWEST REGIONAL BURN MAY 3-6, MISSOURI
Midwest Burners, a whimsical heartland Burning Man group, is proud to
announce our fourth annual Regional Burn, InterFuse 2007: The Afterlife?

RENO - SUPER FUN FUNDRAISER EVENT "IN SPACE"!! 4/14 Reno, NV
As we Reno-Compress for our time on the playa this year,
Cosmo-Naughties of many ages and camps will descend upon the humble burg

of space dance and electronica chill music, interactive art, light

marks something as extraordinary as the dawn of human spaceflight,
expect a HUGE party...IN SPACE!!! This is a fund raiser for Reno-based
Burning Man theme camps Club Verboten, Robotronia, and the new Labwerks
satellite camp of Apokiliptika.
We're also looking for more burners that want to set up their own

"space" theme, but it will be like launching your theme camp... IN
SPACE! If you want to downsize your camp for this event or have always
wanted to do a theme camp but want to start small, here's a great
opportunity. To encourage interaction and visitors to your little spot
in the cosmos, we ask you to offer some kind of finger food. It's not a

ART ART ART!!! Do we not love art? Yes we do! This week's JRS comes to
you in two pieces - and this first half is all about ART, in all its
Green Man glory. It wouldn't be Black Rock City if there wasn't amazing
art, and all kinds of projects and plans are already well underway (and
here it's only April), so this JRS should give you a nice healthy dose
of what's ahead for '07...to wit:

-- ANTICIPATE ART: Announcing...the ART GRANTS for BURNING MAN 2007: THE

-- BRING ART: ART REGISTRATION is open! Register your playa art project!
-- READ ABOUT ART: Ladybee has written an article for RAW VISION magazine
-- and finally, BE ART! This playa art project seeks a very unique
crafty contribution from participants...see the story below!
We give you this special art edition so that you might soak in the art-y
love...but wait, there's more! - a regular edition JRS is comin' right
behind this one, so hold on to your hats and glasses 'cause it's a
double-dose of Jack Rabbit just for you.

A NOTE FROM THE ART GRANT COMMITTEE....
Many budgets were unrealistically high this year. We have a limited
budget of around $400,000 for the playa art grants, and typically, we
give around 30 grants. Asking for $100,000 effectively prices a project
out of consideration. We do not assume that if we fund a small part of
such a huge amount, the artist will fund the rest, or even reduce the
scale of the project...if a project's budget is significant but you're
not expecting the whole amount to come from Burning Man, be specific
about how much you're hoping to cover and how much you're prepared to
fundraise yourself. In addition, if you wait until the day of the
deadline, we are busy looking at hundreds of proposals and we cannot sit
down with you to discuss partial funding. The time to consult with us
about that is long before the deadline. Please see our freshly updated
Grants Guidelines for more information on this process.

ART QUESTIONNAIRE IS OPEN OPEN OPEN! REGISTER YOUR ART PROJECT
If you're bringing a physical art installation to be installed on the
playa in Black Rock City this year, you'll need to register it via our
online Art Questionnaire, found here:
www.burningman.com/installa...ines.html .
Please take the time to read through the material and then go to the
questionnaire. You must submit it digitally; please do not email copies
to us. NOTE: This is not the place to register art vehicles - that's the
Mutant Vehicle application: forms.burningman.com/ .
The Art questionnaire is for installations that will be mapped and
placed on the open playa or Esplanade; art inside your camp does not
need to be registered, unless it contains flame effects or open fire.
Please register art with flame effects early (same place:
forms.burningman.com/ ) as it takes a bit of time for our fire
safety personnel to review your project and to get back to you. After
you register your installation someone from the Art Department will
contact you.

If you're still having trouble please send a little note to jackrabbitspeaks@burningman.com - we do get a TON of spam so your message may have been mislaid. Our apologies...but hopefully everyone reading this is getting it because they want to. Otherwise automated instructions are at the bottom.
You know you work for Burning Man when you know it's June because every dinner in the past week was pizza or chips at a meeting! We'd be lying if we didn't say that this is the busiest, craziest, nuttiest, most exciting and intense year around the Office of the Jack Rabbit, and
outside our door, I think our coworkers would concur. How are your plans going?
Your summer newsletters will be winging their way to you soon with LOTS of great info about the Green Man, the art projects this year, and
gorgeous photos and illustrations of the amazing experience we're all about to have....egad, wait for it...in just 65 days!
Seen the enviro blog lately? The story of the Panhandle Bandshell project...the new plan for ICE in BRC (hint: ice will be close by, no
matter where you are in the city!) and more daily tips from all of YOU! burningman.com/environment/blog/
We won't babble today. There's too much to talk about this week, ya know? Only this then off we go: we missed a few posts (oops) in the
Resource issue, and a few of you were bummed your posts were left off. Thus, "RESOURCES REVISITED" is due out later this week with a few Resource Issue corrections and errata. Forewarned is forearmed, or something like that.

PLAYA RESTORATION TIPS OF THE WEEK!
DA, Dark Angel of the Playa, has the mic to give you....
DPW Playa Restoration Tip of the Week: LINE SWEEPS!
But first: let's review some basic Playa Restoration Vocabulary:
M.O.O.P. (noun) - Matter Out Of Place: especially as it applies to Black Rock City and it's Citizens. MOOP can be anything that does not belong on the Playa: cigarette butts, bottle caps, glowsticks, fireworks... but is often disguised as debris, i.e., broken bits of wood, plastic, metal, glass, and plants. MOOP can also be a condition: burn scars, grey water, dunes, paint, etc.
moop (verb) - to pick up Matter Out Of Place
mooper (noun) - one who moops
Okay, does everybody got that? Sounds simple, right. Let's move on...
Line Sweep (noun) - a line up of moopers side by side and arms width apart; a quick and efficient community effort for scanning and picking up Matter Out Of Place over a given area of playa surface such as your camp, city block, art installation, village, etc.
Line Sweep Rule of Thumb:
1.) Figure out the WIDTH and LENGTH of your area (camp, installation, etc.) and define your BOUNDARIES; this is the area that you will focus on. Use anything that will define your space like traffic cones, flags, or even lawn chairs.
2.) LINE UP along the width of your area arms width apart (roughly 6 ft), this will give you your optimal number of moopers
3.) MOOP OUT from one side of your area to the other. Mark hot spots or problem areas for clean up after. Turn around, Line Up, and Moop Out again. Line Up until no trace is found.
* Don't forget to go back and take care of those hot spots and problem areas!
Any questions?

COSTUME RECYCLING AT KOSTUME KULT
"Fellow burners...
This year, Kostume Kult re-welcomes you to our humble esplanade dome for a riot of costumery, crafts and paints. Since 2002 we have
'costumed the naked' and all comers with donations from all around. In this Green Year we will be giving stuff away but also emphasizing the theatrical side of costuming with our twisted, Dark Side of Oz theme encouraging all fantastical costumers to come by our dome and (all new!) Flying Monkey pub for a DJ set, frosty rain-forest-friendly beverages and random ridiculum. (Extra treats will be awarded for absurdity.)
For the Green Man we now put a special shout-out for Costume Recycling to any and all folks who can drop stuff off or ship to us now. In the past we have had truckloads of stuff to give away, but this year we are light so we appeal to all the playa-fabulous to support the cause.
Check the backs of your closets and those rickety costume trunks! Many of us have stuff that we have grown tired of or are a little worse
for the wearings. If they are playa-friendly (no feathers or moopiness) you could be making someone's week-- someone who can make magic with your forgotten orphans. Save the costume orphans!
If you want to send, please email us at kult@kostumekult.com or stop by Kostume Kult's costume dome in Konsortium Village anytime. We can pay for shipping if necessary and also interested in any costume shop fire-sales you may hear of.
With any other Kostume Kult questions you can email either of us... XO

RV DUMPING - SUTCLIFFE MARINA
Joe wrote with this one: "If your RV is full-up when you leave the Burning Man event, the closest RV dump is on the Reservation at the
Marina at Sutcliffe. It is only a few extra miles but you do not have to haul all that crap around! They are open during the day from 7:00 AM
to 7:00 PM, cost $10.00. A park elbow is now required due to a nasty incident of someone losing their hose in the works, if you do not have
one they will sell you one for $15.00 and include a free dump. Instead of just one dump site, they have several empty trailer spaces that they use when there is heavy demand so there is little or no wait
Directions: Take the highway turnoff to Sutcliffe just past Nixon. This is the only slightly longer scenic route. When you get to the Y that
goes to Sparks, go to Sutcliffe and take the last right turn in town- it goes right to the Marina. When you are done go back to the Y and proceed to Sparks and Interstate 80.
If you are planning on jumping in the lake (very refreshing and highly recommended) be sure to buy a day use permit in Nixon for $9.00 per
vehicle."

NORTHWEST BURNERS PASSIN' THROUGH CEDARVILLE
We remind you every year that the speed limits in the small Nevada towns on the way to Burning Man are NOT to be trifled with...in these places, 25 means 25, not 26, 27, or 30 and certainly not more. These are issues of safety for the residents, and if that doesn't compel you, maybe the threat of a good old fashioned ticket will... well, anyway, we've heard from our cub reporter in Cedarville that the C'ville police are
sharpening their pencils lately too, and we're asked to warn our readers that south of Duck Flat to Gerlach is "fifty frikkin' five," friends,
and not a smidge higher. The portion of the stretch that was state highway (70 MPH) that's now designated county road is 55 MPH, and
apparently locals who don't notice are getting tagged pretty regularly.
Say it with us now: Obey all posted speed limits, get to Burning Man safe and sound (and speeding-ticket-free)!

FREE FUEL FOR ART CARS POWERED BY VEGETABLE OIL
The Birds of Playadise are back again, and serving the art car community. Most of you already know that diesel cars and trucks are
easily converted to run on waste veggie oil (WVO), which you can get for free from your local sushi shop or french cafe. This year, some art
cars will be running WVO on playa too. The Birds of Playadise want to support WVO-powered art cars by GIVING AWAY Waste Veggie Oil at Burning Man for use at Black Rock City.
Even if you don't have a WVO car, stop by the camp's education station to learn about this easy and accessible carbon-neutral fuel alternative. (We'll also be exhibiting a converted WVO vehicle at the Green Pavilion at the base of the man.)
If you're an art-car person who may need WVO on the playa, it would be great to hear from you in advance. And please feel free to be in touch if you have questions about converting your diesel engine to run WVO .

DO YOU EXPRESS YOUR FAITH AT BURNING MAN?
"My name is Allison Shelley and I am a staff photographer at the Washington Times as well as a regular playa-ite and Burning Man participant.
I am interested in doing a photo-heavy feature story for the Times that would basically focus on religion within the context of Burning Man--
how more 'traditional' religion is received at an event that has been described as a gathering place for those embracing alternative forms of spirituality.
In that vein, I am looking to talk with individuals or groups who openly express, celebrate or share their faith on the playa-- such as in
prayer, rituals, gatherings-- whether they be Christian, Muslim, Mormon, Jewish, etc.
I can be reached at ashelley(at)washingtontimes(dot)com. Many thanks in advance!"

HELP EXODUS EMPTY OUT BLACK ROCK CITY!
Evacado and Stacie from the Exodus team wrote: "Since 2000, we have had a good track record of making Exodus better each year, but in 2006 we got to see what happens when we don't have enough volunteers. I think we can all agree that last year's Exodus sucked. So this year, we are working hard to make this the fastest and safest Exodus ever! And we need your help!
Exodus needs you!
The Exodus team is always in need of volunteers to direct traffic out of Black Rock City at the end of the event.
*Are you interested in volunteering, but don't want to commit to something during the event?
*Are you planning on staying for a day or more after the Man burns?
*Are you interested in shorter shifts - 6 hours, instead of the 8 hours necessitated by other departments?
If you are thinking "Yeah! That's me!" Then Exodus is the department for you! Just about everything Exodus does is after the Man burns, so
you can play free all week, and then hang out and give back to your city at the end.
In our quest to empty Black Rock City as quickly and safely as possible, we need lots of people to fill four-to-six hour shifts on Saturday,
Sunday and Monday of the event, Roles include:Set-up: 10-20 dedicated, hardworking volunteers needed to set hundreds of cones to delineate the exit lanes and merge points. This happens during the day on Saturday.
Exiters : Direct traffic into and across lanes of traffic. Answer a few questions, untangle snarls, but mostly wave goodbye! We need lots of
Exiters: Bring a friend! - Sunday and Monday.
Flaggers : This is a job that requires a bit more time commitment - Flaggers will attend certification class that takes about 4 hours and is
held in Gerlach on Wednesday during the event. The certification is good for two years. Flaggers abide by Nevada State laws and guidelines regarding traffic control on the county roads around the event. Transportation is provided, and there is an opportunity to get paid 10$ per hour for your work as a flagger. We have 42 shifts to fill - we need to train a lot of new flaggers!
Tear-down: Some more hard-working people needed on Tuesday to pick up all those hundreds of road cones.

LAST YEAR FOR PISS CLEAR -- BLACK ROCK CITY'S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER! CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!
Adrian, who will always look better in hot pants than any of us, writes: "This will be the last year of publication for PISS CLEAR, Black Rock
City's favorite alternative newspaper. Yup, the end of an era...
We're doing three final issues for this year's Burning Man, and then calling it quits. It's gonna be 13 years - and that's how long the Black
Rock Gazette lasted - so it's seems like the right time to end it.
So if you've EVER wanted to write something for PISS CLEAR, this year is your last chance. This is the our annual CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS. So ... send me stuff!
Here's what we're looking for: interesting articles, rants, photographs, comix, items for the Out/In list, whatever. To get an idea of what we
do, check out the PISS CLEAR web site at: www.pissclear.org
Think of us as the Vice magazine of the playa. We're Burning Man's snarky reality check, so keep it sassy, saucy, and fun -- and specific
to Burning Man. Sorry, no long-winded, self-serving articles about your theme camp or art project. We're not a company newsletter. We're more like a Black Rock City lifestyle magazine.
Deadline for advance submissions is August 1st. If you'd like to submit something, or for more information, please e-mail Adrian at:

GREEN BURN PROJECT NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Tedward says: "The Green Burn project is a dedicated group of people trying to make non-petroleum based fuels available to the fire conclave for the night of the burn. lafc.org/green_burn.html
One of the fuels that we have selected to replace white gas, Ethyl Acetate, is particularly hard to find at industrial purity. At reagent
purity, it's extremely cost prohibitive ($40/gal). We KNOW that, among other things, it's used as a replacement for acetone in some nail polish removers, so an industrial source must be out there. But we can't find it.
So, we need folks who have any connection to any chemical supplier to ask if Ethyl Acetate is available in economy sources."

We're collecting these thought spores over the summer and from participants on the playa. We'll send them back out through performances and projections at the Chapel of the Holy WOW in EverWOW Camp. 10-piece bands, cheerleader squads to bell choirs, and monologuists to interpretive dance clowns, in addition to all the surprises we'll
find once we get out there. And hey, we even have outriggers for aerial acts - a ring on one side, a trapeze on the other.

PARTICIPATE IN THE GOLDEN SPIRAL
"We are looking for volunteers from the Burning Man community who would like to participate in our project 'The Golden Spiral'. The Green Man is a theme dear to our heart as our planet calls out for us to become more in tune and in alliance with Nature, to green life, to living in harmony with the cosmos, the universe and our world. There is so much strength in working together and a bound is formed in creating 'Art without Boundaries'. Any amount of time you can give to the project will be much appreciated. We live in San Francisco and will be working in a large studio space until the day we leave for the Playa on August 22nd.
There is room for painters, sculpture, carpenters (on the playa), decorators and fairy making or any thing you can contribute. The Golden
Spiral is created by the Golden mean and is found throughout nature, art, architecture, science and humans. We will create a path to walk the Golden Spiral into the center of the great Sequoia tree. The Sequoia tree symbolizes immortality and represents earth. Green is also
considered the color of peace and ecology and in this time when ecology and peace are of great concern, this is very appropriate. The tree will stand in the center of the spiral. Inside of the tree will be a staircase that spirals upward into the heart of the tree. It will be
interactive in nature. Participants will be able to enter the spiral and climb upward to a nest positioned on an 8-10 foot platform. The tree
will be 40 feet at the highest point and the bird's nest will be at 30 feet. The floor and the center of the tree (Golden Spiral) will consist
of an altar to Nature, to Mother Earth and to the Origins of Creation, which will also be interactive. Those who enter can leave tokens,
prayers, wishes, remembrances, memories, celebratory writings, drawings and tributes to communicate to the Great spirits. For more detail please find a description on the site www.clearheart.org and click 'Burning Man Project'. Please contact either Pegasus or Skeeter Jones at millarp@surgery.ucsf.edu."

This time of year it can be hard to imagine anything past the specter of Burning Man, but there is indeed life after the Playa, and we call
it...Decompression! Your Burning Man Special Events Team is already hard at work planning this year's spectacular SF Decompression Heat the Street FaIRE!, which will be October 7th back on Indiana Street--and we need YOU!
To reserve a space for your art, theme camp, mutant vehicle, or performance, please email flambelounge@burningman.com TODAY so we can accommodate and celebrate YOUR special contribution to this community. Fire performance and fire/steam art submissions must be in before Burning Man to support the fire permit process - earlier is definitely better, so tell us now if you would like to help us heat the street!
Decompression is organized through a large team of amazing volunteers. To be part of the process that makes Decompression so special each year, please email firekitty@burningman.com.
Also in the works: the LA Decom is Saturday, October 13th! You can register to participate in that by e-mailing la@burningman.com.
To find out about other Decoms and Regional Events in a city near you, see: regionals.burningman.com/.
While preparing for the playa, take a moment to plan how your art will make it to a local Decom and other regional events. That's right! Take
your art on the road!
Keep the fires burning year-round - pARTicipate! flambelounge@burningman.com

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION - FIGMENT 2007
This is a call for participation for the Figment Festival on Governors Island in New York Harbor on Sunday, July 8. The Figment Festival is a
new arts festival that will grow in the coming years with the help of a diverse group of New York area artists and community groups.
Governors Island is a former military base in New York Harbor in full view of southern Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
This year, Figment will be a one-day celebration of creative culture held on Governors Island. All of the organizers and staff are
volunteers, and the event will be open to the public. The guiding principles for the event roughly follow those of Burning Man and the
regional burns.
Think of it as a picnic, with art... an art festival in the middle of New York harbor on a historic island with themed areas or events being
created by the participants. Stage a scavenger hunt or farcical competition. Lead a yoga class or teach people to ballroom dance. Give gifts, facepaint, or take a walk around this beautiful place.
The Figment Festival is seeking any and all enthusiastic creators and do-ers to contribute content. What is content? Puppetry, costuming,
sculpture, dance, performance art, installations and mobile "art-carts," workshops, games, arts and crafts, sound art, and anything else you can imagine! You can set up your own area or host a scheduled event as you wish. What do you want to create to share with the community? Bring it out to Figment and try it out!
The festival will take place from 11am to 5pm. Art and installations can be set up as early as 10am, and in some cases may be able to be
brought to the island the day before. Let us know if you need help!
More information about the festival is available on our website at www.figmentnyc.org
(Please note that this is a temporary site. We expect to have our full site up in the next few days.)
If you have a project you would like contribute, please visit www.figmentnyc.org/participate for more information.
The event is being produced by Action Arts League (www.actionartsleague.org), a downtown NYC based not-for-profit arts association in collaboration with THE PURE PROJECT (www.thepureproject.com) and a coalition of NYC artists and community groups.
