Hoosiers on the playa?!?

Dear Friends:
On my way to the playa, I just learned of the existence of your group... are any of you folks representin' on the playa this year?
If so, I'd love to meet you hardy souls. I grew up in Muncie and got my MA from Ball State... now I live in Italy working on my dreamproject: www.artmonastery.org and I'm in SF and on the playa with the "Roadshow" a musical theatre piece about burningman. ( www.burningopera.com ).
We'll be at the Burning Opera Camp in the Blue Light District at 6:30 and DNA if anyone wants to stop by. On thursday evening, we'll meet around 8PM and then go and do a film shoot on an art car. Please feel free to join us in full freak regalia.

WELCOME!!!

Lakes of Fire is a private gathering on private land in beautiful Southwest Michigan, USA. The Great Lakes area’s official Burning Man Regional Event, Lakes of Fire is sponsored by the Great Lakes Experimental Arts, LLC, and seeks to bring the artistry and energy of Black Rock City to the Upper Midwest and Ontario. Specific location details will be sent to those who purchase tickets.

GATE HOURS:
Thursday – June 25th, 2009
12:00 Noon – 12:00 Midnight – Gate closes.

Friday – June 26th, 2009
8:00 AM – 12:00 Midnight – Gate does not close!

Saturday – June 27th, 2009
12:00 Midnight – 6:00 PM – Gate closes.

Participants only! No spectators please. You must be on site by 6:00 PM to participate in Lakes of Fire. No admittance will be allowed after this time.

Sunday – June 28th, 2009
All participants except for organizers, DPW, and Earth Guardians must be off the property by 2:00 P.M. No exceptions.

The Greeters’ Station will be your first stop on your way into the event. We ask that you stop your car, stretch your legs, and come say hello to the Lakes of Fire Greeters. They will fill you in on what you need to know for the weekend of fun, family, friends and FIRE! You can check in your Art Car here! But please do not try to run the blockade at Greeters’ Station. Pink Gorillas are on hand with stun guns to deal with such individuals. You’ve been warned.

SN 09 Volunteer Opportunities

It's that time again folks! We're asking for volunteers to help make
Scorched Nuts: Rebirth the best one yet. To do that we need you!
There are many ways, great and small, to Participate. You can
volunteer with one of our volunteer teams, from Medics to Earth
Guardians, and give a few hours of your time to making our
infrastructure run smoothly.

Gate needs YOU!
With the change in venue has come changes in gate. This year's gate
will be even more interactive than ever before! Be sure to be there
for all the fun and antics by joining the gate team today! You'll be
the first to see everyone as they enter into our fair 'city'. Gate is
looking for at least three people to fill each shift, so get a group
together to sign-up and man the gates! It's a favorite way for many
to participate.
The gate will be open:
Thursday, June 11th from 2pm to 10pm
Friday, June 12th from 10am to 10pm
Saturday, June 13th from 10am to 10pm.

Medic needs more volunteers!
Medic team is a needed and valued volunteer team at our event. To
volunteer all you need is to know basic First Aid and CPR, however, if
you're a First Responder, EMT, Fireperson, Nurse, Doctor, and/or
certified in First Aid/CPR and good in a medical crisis then we're
imploring you to take a shift. Medic team is needed around the clock,
but more so during 'peak' hours. Medic team needs YOUR help.

Rangers could use a few good folks!
Rangers are the mediators and 'security' at our event. If you're good
in crisis situations, putting drunks to bed, helping people, and
keeping an eye out for others, then this might be the team you're
looking for. It's a great way to meet people as you walk the grounds
and to be an integral part of many participants experience of our
event.

DPW makes the city!
DPW or Department of Public Works, is a dedicated group of individuals
who come in before the effigy goes up and the camps come in, to set up
infrastructure and layout for the event. With all that hard work
comes some mad props and knowing that you helped create an experience
the participants won't forget.

EarthGuardians needs a few good hands!
Let's make sure everyone understands our commitment to protecting the
land by LEAVING NO TRACE. Fully participate by not leaving something
for someone else to take care of. Bring gloves and sturdy garbage
bags and be prepared to take away your own trash and any other trash
left behind you can grab. Join the EG team in daily MOOP sweeps!

Lamp Lighters light up the night!
What better way to participate and see the sights (and be seen) than
to join the Lamp Lighters. At dusk you, and the other Lamp Lighters
volunteers, will walk the city, lighting the way for the evening

way home or to the next amazing theme camp.

Hey Indiana Burners,

Do you all know about Piss Clear, the Burner magazine, that was around for 13 years? It’s been called “the Vice Magazine of the playa” – sharp and funny with an alternative view of Black Rock City. I found out that RE/Search Publications has published BURNING MAN LIVE, which has the best of all 13 years (1994-2007), including “Best of Black Rock City,” “Sex and Drugs,” “Playa Fashion Do’s and Don’ts,” “You Know You’re a Burner When…” “Borg Wars,” interviews with Larry Harvey (Burning Man cofounder) and Harley DuBois (Director of Community Services), and introductions by Brian Doherty, Adrian Roberts, and Malderor. This book is 320 pages, and HUGE (8.5 by 11 inches) of pure Burning Man history– highly recommended – with really great articles and photos.

It's time to kickoff the 2009 Burn season with good drinks, good food, and good Burner company at Johnny's Tavern in Overland Park, Kansas.

We're simplifying things this year. Instead of eating at one place and then moving to another for drinks, we've combined things in a single establishment. Johnny's has a full menu, two full bars, and plenty of parking.

We've reserved Johnny's back room so there's plenty of space and tables for a large gathering. Just tell the door greeter you're looking for Midwest Burners.

The InterFuse Kickoff has become a yearly, informal tradition where we kick around new InterFuse ideas, hash out art concepts, plan theme camps, discuss camping arrangements and meet new friends. If it's about InterFuse, it's fair game.

Bring paper and pen. You're definately going to want to write something down, or draw your InterFuse camp layout, or sketch some burnable art ideas, or pass along your email address...

SN Volunteer Work Weekend

As we quickly approach the second year for Scorched Nuts (http://www.scorchednuts.org) we wanted to let you know of a way to benefit the community, the event, and the camping venue. Burners from IN, KY, and OH will be gathering at Hannon's Camp America (the venue for Scorched Nuts) from May 31st to June 1. We'll be camping out (free tent camping, $10 bunk rental if that's your thing), painting signs, digging post holes, building bridges, and ladders into tree houses. This work is mutually beneficial to the community and Hannon's. Come help us foster more community growth and give back. And as always is the case when Burners gather to work, we'll have an amazingly good time.

SN Ticket Changes and Updates

Hey folks, we've been looking over our ticket sales deadlines and have decided to make a couple of quick, and beneficial to the procrastinator, revisions. First, the deadline for mail-in orders has been pushed back to May 31st for the postmarked date. If it's postmarked after that you're check or money order will be sent back in the mail and you'll have to purchase your ticket on-line or with a vendor. Secondly, tickets will be on sale on-line and will vendors until June 12th. After that time you can purchase your tickets at the gate. Also, you have until midnight tonight to purchase a ticket for the $30 price, after that until June 12th tickets will be $40. We've also lowered the gate price to $50. All deadlines, unless otherwise noted, are until 11:59pm of the date listed. Also please note that there has been a gate policy change, there will be NO in-and-out passes this year. Be prepared to come and stay. You will not be permitted to leave and come back once you exit the gates. Thank you.

To summerize:

Mail-in postmark Deadline: May 31st for $40 tickets
On-line/Vendor Deadline: June 12th for $40 tickets
$30 Ticket Deadline (on-line only): May 12th
$40 Ticket Deadline: June 12th
$50 Gate Ticket Sales: June 19th during gate hours - June 21st at 5pm

Last time we had Pork Centerloin, cold green beans in a blu cheese garlic sauce, green salad with home-made mustard balsamic dressing. This fed about 20+ people for one dinner. We have delicious vegetarian fare as well. And as always, wonderful community member Rebecca purchases and cooks it all up for us. We love her, her cooking, and her generosity.

InterFuse Effigy / Stage Performances

Hey there excited InterFuse-lovin' people! As you know, this years effigy is a large TV-stage for performances. We have everything from an opening ceremony (Thurs at 6pm) to movies & documentaries to educational talks to poetry readings....and SO much more! The schedule is up on the website ( http://www.midwestburners.com/interfuse/eventsandperformers.html ) so check it out!

Even with all the scheduled programs there are still a few open slots just waiting for YOU, wonderful, beautiful participant, to....you guessed it....pARTicipate! Be it being a part of the poetry jam, talk show, fashion show, or creating your own programming.

For all you theme camps out there, perhaps a 'commercial' on the stage is JUST the thing for you. Just come to the stage, find the stage manager (Poosie Kat, JeffZ, Trish, and Laura) and there you go! Also, PSA's sound like a fun way to participate and share with the community at large. If you're a performer without a place to perform, this is your venue darlin', come out and share yourself with us! Fun for the performers and the viewers.

Be sure to come out to watch and/or add your talents to the list. There are still calls out for folks to participate in the Opening Ceremonies, Poetry Jam, Talk Show, Fashion Show, Bribe-per-View, and open time slots....so be sure to make your way over and join in the fun and excitement!

The rest of the time the TV will be an open stage but without lights, sound, and video.

ALSO, we desperately need night owl Stage Managers from 2AM-5AM Friday morning and 12:45AM-5AM Saturday morning! That's a 3 hour and a 4 hour 15 minute period! I KNOW there are two of you out there who can help out for 3-4 hours! These shifts are during Bribe-Per-View, so you'll be getting bribed to play movies. No live performance coordinating is needed! It will be very EASY and FUN!! Plus, Trish will give you bacon!

If you don't want the meal plan, then you'll need to bring enough food for yourself for the whole weekend. Only those that pre-pay for the meal-plan can partake of the delicious food that Rebecca prepares....it's worth MORE than the $7....especially for a weekends worth of food. Rebecca will post a meal list for you all to look over and "Yay" and "Nay" here soon.

Bring all your costume ideas. Bring those bits that you've been saving, but have yet to find a use for. Bring your sewing machine if you have one. Bring your yard and needles. Bring your questions and your knowledge. Bring those items that are just too plain-jane for your burner outfits. This time we're ALL the teachers and we're ALL the students....well...actually that's the normal bit....but still. We're going to be helping one another out, bouncing ideas off one another, learning little tips, hints, and tricks from those that do what they do best. Later there can/will be more in depth workshops on much of what'll be covered this weekend.

If you have an art project, performance piece, theme camp or workshop that you want to share with our community, but are lacking some funds, you can get help! At a venue in Downtown Dayton (To Be Announced)

The Sideshow is an annual event in cooperation with The Dayton Circus Creative Collective. Previous year's events connected many genres of art, from music and food to installation and performance art - spectacular nights showcasing many artists both new and established, from many diverse backgrounds. This year's event will be even more incredible. Join us at The Sideshow and share your artistic vision with Dayton and the World!!

We are open to art of all forms. If you've never shown your artwork or performed publicly before, The Sideshow may be the perfect event for your debut! Static artists have the opportunity to show their work in creative instillations, and two stages will be made available to musical acts and performance artists. We encourage musical acts to include visual or interactive parts to their performance. If you have a vision to be realized in another way, please contact us, we may be able to accommodate you. We want you to help us create a show that Dayton will remember.

APPLICATION

Please include the following information:
1. Your Name/Your Group's Name
2. What does your creation look or sound like? How do you affect your audience? What do you want them to feel, think, and experience?
3. How much space will you need to share your art? If performing, how much time?

Please remember to include visuals and/or audio of your work. Artwork submitted by those chosen as contributing artists may be used in promotion of The Sideshow, The Dayton Circus Creative Collective, and especially YOU. All artists will be encouraged to make their work available for sale, and there is no commission fee for selling work at The Sideshow. If you choose to donate any of your proceeds, the contribution will be tax deductible.

If you are selected as a contributing artist, members of The Dayton Circus will gladly assist you in meeting obligatory periodic "milestones" including: preparing an artist's statement, contributions for promotional materials, attendance at planning meetings and installation of work. This is a cooperative community event, and all contributors will be required to volunteer one day (4-8 hours) of effort beyond the installation of their own work. You will soon find out how exhilarating, stimulating and rewarding is to work with such an energetic and creative group! We want this show to not only include your creation but your energy as well.

We would like to challenge you to avoid using paper, CDs or other resources unnecessarily. It is preferred that you submit your application letter via e-mail to thesideshow@DaytonCircus.org with 2-5 examples of your work attached. We prefer MP3's for Audio, YouTube for video, and JPG's for photos, though we can work with most digital formats. We may request more examples of your work before making our decision.

17th Annual Shamrock Run & Walk - Indy

The 17th Annual Shamrock Run and Walk is open to people of all ages and abilities. Come join the fun with thousands of others by participating in either the 4-mile Run or the 4-mile Walk from Monument Circle downtown to Fountain Square, home of the Irish Hill. The Indy Sports Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization with a mission of promoting amateur sports and lending assistance to persons and organizations engaged in such activities. The St. Patrick's Day Celebration is our largest charity event and one of the longest standing traditions in Indianapolis. The Fountain on the Square will be flowing Green when the Shamrock Run takes place on Saturday, March 15th from 7:00am - 11:00am. Come out and show your support for the participants! Resonate - Chicago

Looks like our friends and neighbors in Chicago are at it again. Resonate 3.0 - March 29th.

They have almost double the space as last year!

Also at this time they're sending out a call for people interested in helping out with this all volunteer burning community event. WOOT!!! So not only can you mark your calendars for a kick ass party where you'll meet a ton of fantastic fun people, but you can be one of the rockstars that help put it together. How cool is that!

Resonate was invented to bring all the tribes in the midwest together under one roof! And if the past two years are indication, I'd say that they've DONE it.

All the money (every penny) made at Resonate goes straight back to the community into a fund that supports other activities like, Decomp, Town Hall meetings, BRAF, Art grants, etc... and theirr full $ budget is completely transparent, and is sent out in detail to their announce list!

Aaaand we're back. I know, it's been...hours!

And I have to rub my eyes and make sure I'm reading that counter on
Burningman.com correctly ....ulp. Yep. 144 days until Burning Man.
That's what's known as a gross, which is a lot when you're counting
bottle rockets, but not very many when you're counting days until we
burn. Whoa.

And there is SO much going on in this, the year of the Green Man. You've
just seen the art grants (wow, right?) - but that's just the tip of the
iceberg! Folks, say hello to this weekend's OPEN HOUSE/GREEN HOUSE/BEACH
HOUSE event in San Francisco - your chance to plug in and get involved
with building Black Rock City this year, AND to participate in some wild
and wooly mindshare with hundreds of other folks seeking and sharing new
ways to Green the Burn...PLUS the launch of the amazing Ocean Beach Fire
Pits later that night to warm up the American coastline with Burning Man
art! That's the very first item below - can you believe all that good
stuff in just one day? Don't miss out.

But that's not all that's going on; April, it seems, is an incredibly
busy month on the proverbial Big Burning Calendar, with the start of
walk-in ticket outlet sales (new - even more outlets!), projects gearing
up (check out Participate! for just a few), and super-smoking-hot
Regional and Events/Happenings sections for you to peruse. We're
especially eager to share the news of TOAST! the Arizona burn - just
FIVE DAYS left to get those tix.... and DARK SKIES - SINGULARITY, the
Southwest Regional Burn near Las Vegas...just to name a few...
Washington DC gets in on the action with a Burning Man film fest this
month too...there's too much going on out there to do it justice with
just one paragraph, so check out all the happenings below!

Also, the Playa Restoration folks took a minute to share with you their
tricks and tools of the trade, AND we've got a friendly reminder about
Plants at Burning Man. PLUS MORE. Seriously. In short, a supremely
news-packed second half of this week's JRS.

BUT before you move to that....

Remember in JRS V11:#8 when we told you to save the date for May 5? On
that day, Burners Without Borders (and that means you, even if you don't
know it yet!) will share the second annual Cinco De Playa Worldwide
Beach/Park Cleanup Day. Burners will be joining together in their home
towns to conduct organized beach and park cleanups - synchronized with
others all over the world! BWB's first Cinco De Playa last year cleaned
up beaches in five states and three continents; this year, by partnering
with the regional network, we want to reach even farther.

Here's how you can take part in this worldwide event: contact your local
regional, if you have one, to check if there's a beach or park cleanup
already underway in your area. (Not sure if you have a regional? Visit
http://regionals.burningman.com .) So far we've heard tell of several
planned cleanups (and of course a lot of fun to go along with the work),
from Coney Island in NY, to Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, to a Cincinatti
riverfront -- lots of Regional groups have taken up the charge and are
planning to participate in this fun civic event.

If your region HASN'T planned anything yet, maybe YOU know a perfect
local spot that can use some attention, and you can share it with your
regional and head up a local effort. All you need is some trash bags and
an announcement on your local list to get the fire started. Don't have a
regional? Don't let that stop you! Organize your friends and campmates
and let us know what you're up to.

In celebration of this year's theme "the Green Man", our annual Burning
Man Open House and Volunteer Recruitment Day will feature a major Green
House theme to help you green your burn!

As in prior years, this is your chance to meet the coordinators of our
City, and learn how you can become one of the 3,000+ volunteers that
create it. This year, we're adding a complete green fair, with an
eco-fashion show, alternative energy demonstrations and presentations, a
'trashion' workshop, solar cooking, green art, and a whole lot more!
Even our annual pot luck and BBQ social will be earth-friendly.

THEN....it all began at the beach, so after the event, we'll all head to

12-3PM: Volunteer resource tables open - meet the volunteer coordinators
from over 20 departments that organize our creative chaos into our city.

Greeters to Artery to DPW to Rangers to Playa Info to DMV to the Geek
Squad, we fuel our city on participation. WE need YOU to be part of WE
to make the dream real! You'll never be the same...

- Ongoing green demonstrations indoors and out: Check out the Trashion
Bee, the Friends of Black Rock, green lighting and videos, displays on
how to be green, the National LNT traveling trainers - even a
hydrogen-fueled rocket! Bring old sheets, socks, pants, sweaters, shirts
and swatches to create a MOOP bag or playa outfit at the Bee.

- TICKETS: get the last of the $250 TICKETS! Burning Man 2007's $250
tickets are nearly sold out -- but you can buy them during the Open
House in person from MeanBean. Just look for the Boy Scout! Cash only.

2PM: Eco-fashion show - get your trashion on the stage, or be trashy
playarazzi!!!

THEN....

3PM: Leave no trace at BMHQ. Head toward Ocean Beach...consider meeting
at the Beach Chalet back patio for cocktails and a bite to eat.

7 PM - OCEAN BEACH: Cruise over to the Burn Platform inauguration at
Ocean Beach and celebrate the installation of these incredible pieces of
Burning Man art right here in San Francisco!

We've been trusted with this beach -- PLEASE treat it as well as you
would the OTHER playa. Since the Park Service is not requiring permits
for this large gathering, there will be Park Rangers present. ** Please
leave alcohol/glass behind.** Bring some wood and enjoy the fire!

MEDIA REGISTRATION 2007: NOW OPEN!

If you're planning to attend Burning Man 2007 as a member of the
press/media, or planning to shoot ANY film, video, audio or photography
that you will use publicly in any way, you need to register with Media
Mecca.

All filming in BRC requires a camera tag that you'll get with
registration. No one may make commercial use of any imagery taken at
Burning Man without explicit written permission - and commercial use is
defined as "anything you will show to anyone beyond friends and family."
(Personal use video users need only sign a Personal Use form upon
entering the city to obtain your Personal Use tag; personal still
cameras need not register, but professional still shooters must register
ahead of time.)

All projects intended for public display must register. It's easy and
painless -- we'll get you squared away and answer any questions.

Since 1996, Burning Man has created a plaque to commemorate members of
our community who have passed away each year. We would like to carry on
this tradition and honor those who have affected our Burning experiences
and participated in making Burning Man happen. This is a call out to
you, our community, to please let us know of any burners lost who you
feel should be added to the Remembrance Plaque. Please send their name,
exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address (use

PLAYA RESTORATION TEACHES YOU THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE

There is an Art to Leaving No Trace. Here are some helpful hints at how
to keep the Black Rock Desert beautiful: a quick internet search for
these inexpensive tools will have you well on your way to leaving no
environmental impact. Remember, restoring the Playa is a Black Rock
Citywide Effort - so pass on the knowledge!

1.) MAGNET SWEEPERS!!! (aka Magnet Rakes)
Do you have any idea how much metal is found on the playa? Whether
you're staking your tent down, building a theme camp or art
installation, or just straight up welding and cutting metal, make your
life easier by using a Magnet Sweeper! All you have to do is roll them
over your work area, listen as the magnet pulls the loose metal off of
the playa, and then discard the metal in the trash using the release
lever. Simple and inexpensive. Every burner should have one.

2.) RAKES (or better yet LANDSCAPE RAKES)
Dust storms happen, dunes build up very quickly and you could find
yourself on your hands and knees using your bare hands sifting for
things that might well turn into MOOP. Instead, use a rake, and pull the
MOOP out. Landscape rakes are wider, can catch more MOOP, and can comb
through more area. You can use the back end of the rake to cut down the
size of the dune and pull it flat.

3.) PUSHBROOMS
That dune that you're standing on that built up on the site of your art
installation or camp... yeah, that's "leaving a trace". The dune will
just get bigger and bigger as it attracts more dust and catches MOOP.
When the winter rains come, that dune will just solidify into a big dune
as hard as the playa surface itself -- which will suck for anyone using
the playa, including us. Do your best and knock it down with a
pushbroom. Have a few on hand and watch how easy it is to restore the
flatest real estate in the Black Rock Desert.

4.) SHOVELS
Got a disaster? Use a shovel. Dump it into a container. Haul it away.
Leave No Trace. Got a dune? Use a shovel. Spread it out. Flatten it.
Leave No Trace.
Got a hole? Use a shovel. Fill it. Leave No Trace. Useful, no?

5.) VICE GRIPS
Okay, so you were a little excessive with the rebar and now you can't
get it out of the ground. Do it the DPW Way and get some Vice Grips
around that sucker. Give it a couple of rotations to loosen up the dirt
around the rebar and then... TWIST back and forth vigorously while
pulling upward (lift with the legs, Hercules, not your back). The dirt
will act as bearings, working that rebar free of the playa.

6.) METAL TRASH CANS
For containing and hauling ash and debris.

A REMINDER ABOUT PLANTS AT BURNING MAN

Given the 2007 GREEN MAN theme, you might be tempted to bring plants to
our event in the Black Rock Desert.

Don't.

Remember: Burning Man is probably the largest "Leave No Trace" event in
the world.

Live plants die on the playa. Ask anyone that has brought them. They
always make a mess. In our history. participants who have brought in
plants, sod, trees, or cut palm fronds have created a MOOP (Matter Out
of Place) disaster. Every site that has used them in any quantity has
cost themselves (or WORSE, the Playa Restoration crew) days and days of
work post-event.

The Gate, Earth Guardians and DPW Playa Restoration Crew are highly
sensitized to the issue, and keep a close eye on everything that enters
our city. If you bring plants, they will stop you at the gate or come
and find you. They have been known to incinerate projects before they
were even begun.

For this reason we have long banned live plants on the playa. No change
to our policy here -- we just want to restate things clearly given our
2007 Green Man theme.

Please support us in this effort. Help us keep the clean up crew sane!
Artificial plants work just as well and look better with a quick
watering. Better yet, construct your own plants and trees from recycled
materials that won't cause MOOP in desert high winds.

Leave your live plants behind. Leave behind ANYTHING that will break up
and/or blow away in the wind, living or dead (trees, twigs, loose paper,
palm fronds, etc.)!

RAT'S RENTAL BIKES - LIMITED SUPPLY, ACT NOW!

ATTENTION MUSICIANS AND POTENTIAL GROUPIES - JOIN THE BURNING BAND!

The Burning Band is forming a NEW camp for 2007. We will be joining with
the newly formed Black Rock Philharmonic to live and perform at
Static/Dynamic Camp. And we're looking for more musicians!

Yes, we want to expand our musical repertoire to play all kinds of

CARNE ARMADA NEEDS YOUR PLAYA SHIPS!!!

Admiral Painjoy writes: "The 'Carne Armada' is a group within the
'PlayaQ' camp.
We need art cars that resemble boats or ships to aid us in
our 'attacks' on the playa this year. We did this last year and
it was a resounding success. Everyone loved it. Many said it
was the highlight of their Burning Man 2006 experience.

We can't describe what these 'attacks' are on this list... it's
Top Secret. But let me assure you... it's a ton of fun!!! (JRS note: oh
my carne-lovin' goodness is it EVER...) There are attacks that occur on
three different days (days and times are secret, but will be told to you
if you
volunteer). The total time for the attacks is around two
hours per day. You can participate in one, two or all three.

Midwest Burners, a whimsical heartland Burning Man group, is proud to
announce our fourth annual Regional Burn, InterFuse 2007: The Afterlife?

Where: The magickal land of Ozark Avalon, Boonville, Missouri

Midwest Burners is a Burning Man inspired social and recreational
association. Our community radiates out from the Kansas City area. Many
InterFuse participants come from the Kansas City and St. Louis areas,
since InterFuse is primarily a collaboration between these two

in the Midwest, to come co-create the InterFuse experience. Of course,

Theme: The Afterlife? theme is a meditation on the interplay of Life and
Death. The theme involves a question mark as a symbol of the questions
this theme poses, such as: Is there an afterlife? If so, what will it be
like? How does our conception (or lack of conception) of the Afterlife
affect our lives now? InterFuse 2007 is your opportunity to express your

Dark Skies - The Singularity Event is the regional Burning Man event for
Southern Nevada and the southwest. Join them May 17-20 on Roach Dry Lake
south of Las Vegas on the California border.

Dark Skies - Singularity is a three day camping trip featuring art,
performance, music, fire, and YOU. This will be the fifth event held on
the fabulous Roach Lake Playa and the second joint regional event
produced on this site.

Currently they are projecting around 700 people on site in May. This is
an all ages event, under 18 with parents, kids under 12 are in for free!

RENO - SUPER FUN FUNDRAISER EVENT "IN SPACE"!! 4/14 Reno, NV

As we Reno-Compress for our time on the playa this year,
Cosmo-Naughties of many ages and camps will descend upon the humble burg
of Reno, Nevada. There, the launch codes will be entered for an evening
of space dance and electronica chill music, interactive art, light
shows, mini-theme camps, and friendly people. But when the celebration
marks something as extraordinary as the dawn of human spaceflight,
expect a HUGE party...IN SPACE!!! This is a fund raiser for Reno-based
Burning Man theme camps Club Verboten, Robotronia, and the new Labwerks
satellite camp of Apokiliptika.

We're also looking for more burners that want to set up their own
mini-theme camps inside the huge venue. You don't have to have a
"space" theme, but it will be like launching your theme camp... IN
SPACE! If you want to downsize your camp for this event or have always
wanted to do a theme camp but want to start small, here's a great
opportunity. To encourage interaction and visitors to your little spot
in the cosmos, we ask you to offer some kind of finger food. It's not a
pot luck, just want to make sure nobody's blood sugar is entirely from
alcohol.

The theme this year is Technophilia/Technophobia ! Below is a message from the Kansas Regional Contact Zay regarding the theme. I have big plans and would love to colloborate on some art too or at least help with making art. Regionals are a great place to test out playa ideas and Interfuse is my start to the summer fun season. Both of these equal a big WIN! If you have not been to Interfuse, it is amazing and not far from Iowa. I expect it to sell out this year so buy tickets when they go up early next year. I will send a message out.

Technophilia/Technophobia
Technology: Do we love it or hate it? Does it isolate us or bring us together? Does it make our lives easier or does it add layers of complications? Do we own our tools or do they own us? Can we live without our technology? Can it live without us? We shape the world through our technology but to what extent does our technology shape our world views?

This theme is a study of modern life that is very relevant to us as burners. Modern technology is both a consumer product and a means to promote consumption. Yet it can also be used to create art and to connect us. Technology extremely enhances our creative abilities yet also enhances our destructive abilities. As we know from our experience with the fire arts, destructive technology can also result in positive beautiful things.

Burners are especially suited for examining our relationships with technology. We are some of the most technologically savvy people out there. We've used the tools of the internet to connect with each other and build a community like no other. We are intimately familiar with creating new uses for technology and subverting it to our own fun purposes.

At InterFuse 2008, we will mock, celebrate, exaggerate, demonstrate, and use technology to create. Bring your fearful or hopeful vision of our technological present and future. All robots, cyborgs, couch potatoes, slaves to the machines, Luddites, interactive tutorials, genetically enhanced humans, virtual selves, icons, nuts & bolts, flotsam & jetsam etc. are welcome! You can take this theme in any direction! Unveil a new and enhanced IF08 Theme version 2.0. Come set up your office cubicle camp, post-apocalyptic scenario, personal billboard, or cyber-utopia. Form a techno cult or create a reality TV game that has gone horribly awry. Show off your inventions, bio-fueled art car, or invite people to add to your open source installations. Create recycled trash art, build a DNA sculpture, or assemble something else so engaging that people find themselves sitting around it for 36 hours straight sipping energy drinks.

At the center of this technological cacophony will sit that most loved and most hated icon of modern technology, that mighty conduit of modern culture, that unmatched propaganda and marketing tool—THE TELEVISION! The TV will be large enough to serve as an open performance stage and projection screen. We will be filling our giant television with our own content. All participants are invited to create Premier Entertainment Programming and clever personal advertising to display on our TV. There must be NO dead air time!!

Our modern society churns out tons of STUFF! So, around the giant television will be piles of personal technology sculptures created by YOU. Bring an effigy of whatever technology you fantasize about burning. Does your cell phone drive you crazy? Build a larger than life cell phone with non-toxic materials like wood, cardboard, paper, cloth. NO BURNING ACTUAL PLASTIC TECH DEVICES! You could give your effigy evil teeth or put something in the screen to express it's annoying qualities. Put your art on the pile around the TV and watch it all BURN on Saturday night when we use our favorite medium, fire, to transform technology and reclaim it as an authentic tool of our imaginations.

Still not figured out how you'll be participating for Scorched Nuts 2008? Do you want to see and be seen? Do you have a patience, good walking shoes, patience, good communication skills, sense of humor, and more patience? Do you just have a way about you that seems to simmer people down? Do you want to be an integral part of SN '08 going off without a hitch?

If you answered yes to the above, then being a Ranger just might be the opportunity that you were looking for!

The Rangers are a cross-section of the community who volunteer some of their time in the role of non-confrontational community mediators. Responding to the ever-changing environment, we address within our community situations that would otherwise require outside intervention. By encouraging and facilitating communication, the Rangers promote awareness of potential hazards, from sunstroke to tent fires. We are emphatically not the police or a paramilitary organization. Rangers are the mediators of public safety and providers of information.

The shifts are flexible, reasonable, and pretty damned fun. You'll be required to have a walkie talkie (and use it properly), walk around the grounds, stopping into camps to chat, spread info (such as: If it didn't come from your body, don't put it in the potty....that you're a Ranger and what you do.....that sort of thing), and be ready to deal with any situations that may arise. Last year Scorched Nuts was pretty quiet, and probably will be again this year.

Dear Camp Leader and Participant,

The goal of any well-managed camp is to reduce trash and determine ways to pack and/or dispose of it properly. As part of the responsibility of a leader, you are tasked with educating all of your members in how to do this for the comfort and enjoyment of all. There is one item of trash that continues to get through the cracks of our education however. This is trash that is often not considered trash, but erroneously thought of and treated as a type of toilet paper. I am of course referring to baby-wipes, wet-wipes, personal wipes, etc. This kind of trash never goes into to porta-potties, regardless of what the package states. The fabric is too sturdy for the cleaning process, and seizes up the cleaning equipment.

Every year, the porta potty vendor has to assign their employees to manually rake the mountains of baby-wipes out of the screens and pick the debris from the gearing with rakes and pliers. This is more than an icky inconvenience to the poor individuals tasked with this horrible job. Because the equipment must be stopped (and this is because it becomes seized up) and it can take hours to dislodge the offending material, the entire sewage treatment flow slows way down. If it becomes too slow, or halts altogether, the vendor faces disturbing consequences, even catastrophe.

The task I am asking you, as a leader in your group, is to educate your people on how to properly dispose of baby-wipes in a manner consistent with your own and BM principles. They can be kept in ziploc baggies for later burning or with the trash going home.

I realize this is a subject that is quite personal, and nobody is going to follow an individual into the privy to enforce this rule. But if the subject can be broached at your first camp meeting, when minds are fresh and focused, we should all see positive results. I ask you to use language that is clear enough for the entire camp to easily understand, and not make light of it. The porta-potty workers I've interviewed aren't amused and desperately want to see results this year. So please, put this item on your camp's agenda, and help all of us have a great burn this year.

Birds and the Bees... Nov. Micro Burn/Party

Party / Post-Burn Season "Micro-Burn" in Carmel, IN just off 146th St. and Meridian

Time TBA (and probably pretty flexible)

This will be an all-night event, bring a sleeping bag to crash inside, or feel free to pitch a small tent in the backyard. Or maybe you'll be one of the ones to pass out in the Cuddle Puddle. Hot-tub, small bonfire, The Pink Flamingo Wine bar, and ridiculousness will all be present. Many will be dressed in costume for this post-Halloween party. However, clothing is always optional. This party will be in the spirit of a burn in most respects : Radical Inclusion, Radical Self-expression, respect for the property and de-commodification all emphasized. (However, it is in a neighborhood, so no effigy will be burned, and noise levels cannot get excessive.)

If you spin fire, or hoop, or any one of such talented performances, please grace everyone with your presence! So far juggling and possibly healing bodywork are the only 'services' on the itinerary at the moment.

And did I mention the full bar will be there? Michael has some wine brewed up for the event, and I will have the usual shots available and maybe some new firey ones =)

Fall WI Decompression

Hi everybody!

Back from the desert. Once again, WI had a good presence there:

A commissioned art piece in the Man Grove. One of about only 50 pieces, out of thousands, that got an art grant from the BM Org.

A Theme camp, now in it's tenth year, that ran Playa Speed Dating on four consecutive nights, including the Critically Single mass bicycle Speed Dating. Hundreds had their chance to hook up.

An Esplanade Theme Village, one of the oldest ones out there, that we coordinate in cooperation with our colleagues from Detroit and Toronto.

A Wisconsin Fire Troupe, performing as part of Temple of Poi, SF, span fire in the Fire Conclave before the Man Burned.

A Wisconsin independent television show was granted Press Status for the ninth year in a row....scenes and interviews from Burning Man will appear on Milwaukee cable TV starting in October.

We are not a very big Regional in the grand scheme of things, but we still make a difference. You should all be proud.

Our Fall WI Decompression will be Saturday, September 22, at the BurningSNOW Center, 2578 N. Weil Street, Milwaukee. This is typically the biggest event of our Burner year. Art pieces from this and previous years will fill the place. Bring your craziest Playa outfits for our fashion Show. Mini Theme-camps, live music and performance, an effigy Burn, a tiny desert created within a city. Far-travelers can write us for crashout space (bring pad and blanket). We are setting up the ticketing now. Stay tuned.

Note that even though the event is a Joint regional event for Az and

This is a Burning Man Sanctioned Regional Event. All proceeds go to

This is a Leave No Trace event. Pack it in, Pack it out, there's no
garbage service out here. Also be advised there is no Water, Power or
Shelter for your personal use on this property. You must bring what
you need to survive.

Bring
what you need for a weekend camp out and you will do just fine!

Directions to the ranch:
Follow these directions and you might think "This gives new meaning
to the Middle of Nowhere!" but you'll find us.

From the East:
Take I-40 through Winslow, AZ
About 6 miles West of Winslow take Hwy 99 North (or West) to Leupp
(small Navajo town).
When Hwy 99 T's at Leupp Rd., turn Left (West)
Go about 18 miles on Leupp Rd. (3 miles past the rez line
cattleguard), 3/10 mile past Milepost 441
Look for a group of 7 mailboxes and a dirt road on your Right. These
mailboxes are off the pavement a little and on the other side of a
fence, so look carefully. In the dark, you probably won't see
mailboxes at all until after you've turned onto the dirt road.

Follow *Dirt Road Directions* below
From the West or South:
From the I-17 and I-40 junction, go East on I-40 about 9 miles to the
Cosnino Rd. exit.
Go North (Left) 2 miles on Cosnino Rd. until it T's at Camp Townsend-
Winona Rd.
Turn Right on Camp Townsend-Winona and go 2 miles to Leupp Rd., which
comes in only on your Left.
Turn (L) on Leupp Rd. and go about 12 miles, 8/10 mile past Milepost
440.
Look for a group of 7 mailboxes and a dirt road on your Left. These
mailboxes are off the pavement a little and on the other side of a
fence, so look carefully. In the dark, you probably won't see
mailboxes at all until after you've turned onto the dirt road.

From that point, follow *Dirt Road Directions*

*Dirt Road Directions*
Turn in on the dirt road that goes by the mailboxes. We'll post a
sign and blinky glowy things at this point. Mailbox numbers are
pretty random out here. our green #77 mailbox is around the middle of
the bunch. Follow the dirt road for 7 1/2 miles. Watch out for the
ditches on both sides of the road. Important: be sure you stay on
the *one and only road in the area that is ever graded* and is wide
enough for two large trucks to pass each other. There are other roads
meandering around the area, but if you stay on this graded road it
will take you all the way to the Gateway Ranch.

In addition to )*( signs that we'll post, you know you're on the
right road when you pass the following landmarks. Distances are
measured from the mailboxes.
*1.5 miles: Low stocktank to your right, just after curves and hill
*2.3 miles:
Cattle guard *3.2 miles: Intersection with low stocktank on your left
(our road curves to the Right at this intersection)
*4.7 miles: 55 gallon painted "caution" barrel before S-curve *5.5
miles: Fork in road where you'll go Left up (and then down) a hill
*6.3 miles: Log cabin on Right. Make sure you take the road to the
Left of the cabin, not the one that goes into the cabin area.
*7.5 miles: Turn in at the "Gateway Ranch" sign. Look for Greeters,
fire, friendly people, and that BMan vibe.

Yay, you made it! Ours are the only houses for miles, 3 buildings
with turquoise metal roofs, sheds, a Navajo Hogan on a little hill,
etc.

The ways people have gotten lost are when they 1) don't watch the
mileposts and miss the turn-off from the highway, 2) keep going
straight at the 3.2 mile intersection and leave the graded road, or
3) don't check their mileage and then think they're on the wrong road
when they really just need to keep going a little further.

*Fire: The Toaster will glow all night, or as long as people feed it.
There will be other fire pits/barrels/sculptures, etc.

*Water: Bring your own drinking and wash water, as usual. A wood
fired hot tub is on the front deck of the main house. This is
especially popular when it gets cold late at night. As with
everything else, the hot tub depends on whether people make it happen
or not. We appreciate help cleaning the tub before and after the
event, and with water hauling using our tank.

*Earth: There's a traditional Navajo Hogan (8-sided log cabin with a
ceiling that looks like an upside down bird's nest) on the hill at
the end of the road to the South. If nobody claims it for sleeping
space, it's open to all. There's a woodstove and lantern inside that
can be used. Hogan is the notorious site of Apple Pie gigglefest.

*Sky: there's more of that than anything else around here. The moon
will be FULL during Decompression weekend. The view stretches up to
Navajo Mountain in Utah and includes Black Mesa to the North, the
Hopi Buttes to the East, and the San Francisco Peaks to the West.

Dates: Friday, October 5th-Sunday, October 7th. Early arrival or late
departure is possible, just let us know. Arrivals before noon Friday
get in free and will be put to work!

There's a rumor floating around about a unisex, found-costume, cast-off couture fashion show this year - so hang onto those gaudy, hilarious frocks you've been saving for just such an occasion! A prize committee is in order for this one! Anyone up for that? Then speak up and DO IT!

...so many exciting surprises are in store...

A few out-of-state artists will be gracing us with their large-scale art, so we'll get a chance to enjoy creativity from other regions, while we show them just how we roll here in Chicago!

Just got back from Burning Man and in need of serious decompression??

Look no further than Recycled Rainbow!

(Tickets stop being on sale online after Sept. 19th as we'll be on the campsite preparing the land for you)

On September 28th – 30th, Recycled Rainbow, an experiment in Temporary Community, will emerge at the Hide-A-Way campground in Leavittsburg, Ohio. Theme camps, art installations, and unrestricted creativity are among the many things you will experience; but this is a no spectator event, so you will find only as much as you are willing to contribute.

It's not about what you get, but what you give.

Recycled Rainbow has 10 simple rules to follow: Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-reliance, Radical Self-expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation, and Immediacy.

Other than firewood and ice, there will be no vending permitted. If you have something to give, gift it out. If you have something you need, bring it in!

Pack everything you'll need for the weekend, take it out when you go, and leave no trace!

There will be no dumpsters or trash cans or trips to the convenience store. Electricity and water are available in the main 'Downtown' campsite, and primitive camping is available in the adjacent "Invisible City".

Prepare for rain!

Prepare for anything, so you can do anything.

Recycled Rainbow is an inclusive community project of which you are an integral part. You are radically responsible, but you are radically free! How will you contribute?

Each event has its own distinct theme. In lieu of our push for radical self-reliance, this year's will be Armageddon. Participants are encouraged to employ this theme in their artworks, costumes, and camps.

Playa Power

Well I'm not a virgin any longer. What a ride my first year was. How cliche is it to say that burning man affected me on so many levels? The playa gave me everything I needed... connected me to someone I'll be living 3 blocks away from in Lafayette (Weld Boy's son)... without me even trying... (I just stopped in front of a stage and started talking to dude) Innumerable amazing experiences... can't wait for next year... I'm sure it will be at least equally amazing. I'll have some pics posted on my picasa web albums before long (linked on myspace)... and some people from my camp shot video of the 3 big burns ... so I'll circulate what I get as I get it. As a side note I'm leaving the country on the 17th and may not be back before new years... so it may be a while before everything gets all packaged up. One thing is for sure... I will remain in awe until next year of the unbelievable energy & participitory environment of burning man!... I need more hugs already! Never made it to the midwesterner parties... damn... too bloody distracted. I love burner girls! Especially bald ones with gas masks & dust goggles.

Coming home in more ways than one

Hello heartburners,

I'm headed up to burning man for the first time this year... I'm wondering if there is anything planned for Indiana burners to meet up in BRC?
I'd like to meet some of you all.

I'm actually living in LV now and will be moving back to Indiana via burning man. I'm planning on travelling back to Lafayette through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota... taking the long way, gonna spend a couple days at Yellowstone, and drive through the Badlands at the very least. Not exactly set in stone this route is. I'm also wondering if anyone from IN or the easterly direction in general would be interested in taking this kind of scenic route back...

I realize most people probably have jobs to go back to and stuff, but fortunately for me I will be unemployed and can take my time getting back...

Tickets are now on sale for the third annual Myschievia, the North
Texas Burn event inspired by Burning Man.

This year's event is now five days long: Thursday October 4, through
Monday October 8. Myschievia will once again take place at the
Armadillo Acres campground near the East Texas town of Hughes Springs.

Early bird prices will be $35 until September 15, then $45 from
September 16 until October 1. Children 3 to 12 pay half-price, and
children 2 and under are free. Ticket sales will end at midnight on
October 1, 2007. There will be NO ticket sales at the gate. We now
accept MasterCard and Visa, but not Discover or American Express.

2. Effigy

The effigy this year is "UnrulyMan," a 24-foot interactive head which
will include a neck and crazy hair that stands on end. Interaction
will be via a crawl-hole in the back of the neck, allowing
participants to move the jaw, shoot beams of light from its eyes, and
other actions as time and creativity allow. The head of UnrulyMan will
be built in Dallas and assembled at the site. Effigy build days will
be announced on the *Myschievia* Tribe.

Participants are also invited to decorate 8 to 12 foot strands of
"hair" (2x4 lumber) and bring them to Myschievia. Guidelines for the
"Hair-Raising" are in the Effigy section on this page:

Ohio burn calls to IN - 9/28-30

It was recommended that I cross-post this here, seeing as how the location picked makes for a reasonable drive from Indiana. I did a zip code to zip code search, and this location is 5.5 hours from Indianapolis. It's not next door to you, but it's sure not on the other side of the world like Black Rock City! :)

I also wish to target Indiana, as a few of my good friends from your home state have come repeatedly to my past events since we started having them in 2002, twice a year. They'd stay the whole weekend and always said it was worth the drive.

It's a Cleveland-based event called "Recycled Rainbow", which started as a decompression house party many years ago, and has grown to an outdoors festival (mainly because we can't fit them in our house anymore!) Attendance is normally anywhere from 30 - 80 people, but now that we're moving it to a campground, many of our veterans won't be prepared for it. I suspect we will lose half our attendance as a result of this move, but the "show must go on" as they say. This is definitely a burner friendly event, and I'm doing what I can to make it an "official" regional burn. Trying to insure the land, get a regional contact present for it, etc.

The location is close to Warren, OH, about 70 minutes from Cleveland, and as I said, about 5 and a half hours from Indianapolis. Bloomington is about one more hour further, so you'd have a 6.5 hour drive.

It is the first regional of sorts that I have ever tried to organize. Looking for helpers, but the real big thing I'm concerned about is getting the word out and bringing in as many burners as we can so we don't lose money on this.

We're looking at probably a $15 ticket price.

The land provides 33 camp sites, all equipped with electrical and water, and there are bathrooms with toilets that flush, and showers. There is an indoor pavilion, and an outdoor stage area, fully equipped with electrical. There is a single entrance, only one way to get in or out.

We'd like to have on hand most importantly, an EMS medic, greeters, and a few volunteers to run the door.

Also need people informed about pyrotechnics, or there may be no burn!

There is a 30 acre clearing on which we can all camp, and many more acres of woods. There is also a fishing pond and a swimming pond (though it may be too cold to utilize either.)

There are no neighbors anywhere near this land for at least a quarter mile, and I will be meeting with those neighbors, plus their local police and fire departments and at least one EMT from their area to discuss this event and what we're doing.

Very much could use your help!

Can I count on any of you to join us? This will be a first for me!

Ohio - Puck Fair

This gatheirng is OH SO close to the Indiana border, it's hard to believe that you could even come UP with a reason NOT to go. In other words, if you're not busy that weekend, want to get to know some amazing people (creative, doers, humorous, helpful) then this just might be the thing for you. It don't hurt none, will be tons of fun, and is yet another way to become involved in the community. If you're on this tribe because you don't know what this burning man thing is all about...believe me, even these littler gatherings hold the answer. Come out, try it out, see what it, and you, have to offer.

Call for participation: Project Swirl

I want to encourage you to participate in my project for the upcoming burn, Project Swirl. Here's what's up.

If you pay an electricity bill, you're paying for lighting. Typically, incandescent lighting, the kind that's been around since Edison. It's not very efficient; most of the electricity becomes heat instead of light. For a long time, there wasn't much you could do about it. Which really sucks as you watch your bill get increasingly expensive. Even worse, the power plants spew tons of CO2 into the atmosphere for no good purpose.

But we now have a choice. We can replace the incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), a newer kind of bulb. They consume just 25% of the energy to produce the same amount of light. They last 10x longer. Plus they have a cool swirl shape! These used to be way more expensive than incandescent bulbs and produce inferior light, but no longer. The cost of a single CFL bulb is way less than the cost of 10 incandescents, not counting the energy savings. Pretty cool huh?

So I began to replace the incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs in January. It's all done now; it cost a whopping $60. And this is sweet: I've already shaved $66 off my electricity bills. So the new bulbs have paid for themselves already! And they continue to save me money. Less CO2 goes into the atmosphere, and less dead bulbs get sent to the landfills. It's a massive win/win/win for everyone.

So what, then, is Project Swirl? I want to strongly encourage you all to replace at least one 60W incandescent bulb in your house with an equivalent-brightness 14W CFL bulb. It may not seem very significant, but here's the thing: if each of my Tribe friends replaces just one bulb, then in a single year we reduce electrical demand significantly, we prevent tons of CO2 from being emitted, and we pocket thousands for ourselves rather than forking it over to the electric company. All this... and only costs maybe 2 bucks per bulb... a cost which pays for itself in less than a year!

Firstly: There is a fellow hoosier burner, Josie from Richmond, who is planning on going out to the playa for the first time ever. She is looking for folks who are going this year for help (and/or tips on) transporting her gear and herself out, as well as the possibility of having folks to camp with. She's an energentic gal with ability to carry her own weight. Remember folks, this will be her virgin burn so she may have a few more questions about what's needed, how to get stuff out there, as well as some guidance here and there once in the desert (think back to your first year....wouldn't you have liked to know about playa foot, MOOP, the portalets, or maybe you've found the best way to fight the heat, cold, dust, or occasional blahs that can happen out there).....in other words, be the kind, wonderful, open hearted peeps that you are.

Secondly: Exodus help needed!
Exodus needs you!
The Exodus team is always in need of volunteers to direct traffic out
of Black Rock City at the end of the event.

*Are you interested in volunteering, but don't want to commit to
something during the event?
*Are you planning on staying for a day or more after the Man burns?
*Are you interested in shorter shifts - 6 hours, instead of the 8
required by other departments?

If you are thinking "Yeah! That's me!" Then Exodus is the department
for you! Just about everything Exodus does is after the Man burns,
so you can play free all week, and then hang out and give back to
your city at the end.
Since 2000, we have had a good track record of making Exodus better
each year; but in 2006 we got to see what happens when we don't have
enough volunteers. I think we can all agree that last year's Exodus
sucked. So this year, we are working hard to make this the fastest
and safest Exodus ever! And we need your help!
In our quest to empty Black Rock City as quickly and safely as
possible, we need lots of people to fill four-to-six hour shifts on
Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the event, Roles include:
Set-up: 10-20 dedicated, hardworking volunteers needed to set
hundreds of cones to delineate the exit lanes and merge points. This
happens during the day on Saturday.
Exiters : Direct traffic into and across lanes of traffic. Answer a
few questions, untangle snarls, but mostly wave goodbye! We need
lots of Exiters: Bring a friend! - Sunday and Monday.
Flaggers : This is a job that requires a bit more time commitment â€“
Flaggers will attend certification class that takes about 4 hours and
is held in Gerlach on Wednesday during the event. The certification
is good for two years. Flaggers abide by Nevada State laws and
guidelines regarding traffic control on the county roads around the
event. Transportation is provided, and there is an opportunity to
get paid 10$ per hour for your work as a flagger. We have 42 shifts
to fill - we need to train a lot of new flaggers!
Tear-down: Some more hard-working people needed on Tuesday to pick up
all those hundreds of road cones.

Announcing Aura Man 2007, July 28-29, at Sun Aura Resort in northwest Indiana.

This year’s theme is Into the Vortex.

Vortex (n.) 1. swirling, twirling, fluid whirlpool; 2. a form of fluid motion in which particles travel in a circular path around an axis; 3. any activity, situation, or state of affairs that resembles a whirl or eddy in its rushing, absorbing effect, irresistible and catastrophic power. (Note to weldboy – ignore that catastrophic reference!)

So get your swirling, twirling minds wrapped around this year’s theme and plan on attending. Get it on your calendars now.

Consider hosting an event or theme camp this year. Just let me know and I’ll get you on the schedule.

Special note: Due to the growing popularity among resort members and burners alike, the attendance increases each year. Consequently, we can no longer reserve RV or motor home space in Central Park. It will be on a first-come basis. But there is lots of overflow parking on the other side of the pool.

We will still have the beach reserved for the event and for tent camping. But the camping will also be on a first-come basis. Overflow tenting is available in Tent City by the Round House.

By the way, if you attended in 2006, kudos to you. Eddie, the person who cleans up the camping area, said he’d never seen campers leave the beach so clean! LNT!!

Aura Man Update

Coming up sooner than you may think is AuraMan weekend (July 28-29). This is the last of your monthly AuraMan Updates. Please be sure and email me if you plan to attend. Let me know which days you will arrive and leave, if you need tent space on the beach, and if you need beach space for art or a music or video stage. I’d also like to know which board you saw this posted on

AuraMan, a participatory event, means you !! Bring out your inner freak at the Freak Parade. Search for things you never thought you’d find at Sun Aura in the Scavenger Hunt. (We are a weird and astonishing bunch of campers, ya know?). Create that piece of art that’s been spinning around in your head. Clear out those chakras and clean up that aura in our Relaxation Station. Be a Lounge Lizard; (definition -- (lounge lizard n. Slang 1. A generally idle man who haunts establishments or gatherings frequented by the rich or fashionable; a social parasite. 2. a man who idles about in the lounges of hotels and bars in search of women who would support him).) Okay, so it’s just a punchbowl of Hurricane and cheesy music from the likes of Mel Torme, Dean Martin, Ethel Merman, Frank Sinatra, and others; but it IS the place to be, to see and be seen. Wear your flamboyant best !!!

This year’s AuraMan theme is “Into the Vortex”. A lot of people have been sharing their creative ideas with me for art projects. There should be a lot of very cool works on the beach this year. Yours should be there, too. Get those creative juices flowing; there’s less than a month left. BURN your art BIG and small.

A new activity this year will be a workshop on the art of Shibari (Japanese Rope Bondage). You’ll want to learn this for later use all summer.

We’re bringing back the Volleyball game this year !! It’ll be on Sunday morning after the Continental Breakfast at the Ashes. We also hope to have Redneck Horseshoes set up somewhere on the beach. And, we’re gonna save one of the large art projects to burn on Sunday night at sundown. Come early, stay late – AuraMan is a weekend-long event.

The redesign of the AuraMan (the biggest Man yet) is complete; now comes the build. If any of you are in camp during the week prior to AuraMan, do drop by AuraMan HQ and see the progress. I’m sure I’ll need a hand periodically throughout the week; the head already is done and ready to explode into a blaze.

Remember, if you intend to burn your art at AuraMan, please keep it as environmentally-friendly as possible (wood, metal, paper, cardboard, cloth). No plastic, rubber, treated lumber, and definitely NO glass. “Safety Third”.

Hey Everyone,

Thought you might like to know about this. I will have a few things in this exhibit, and I am also one of the Triage planners. Check out this week's issue of NUVO for more info. It's going to be a really cool day of events, featuring activist art, music, poetry, film, and then some. Check it out (and come say 'hi!')

On Saturday, June 30, 2007, Fountain Square will host TRIAGE, an all-ages free indoor/outdoor exhibition of public art in a variety of media: two and three dimensional work, installation, dance, performance art, film, spoken word, and music, all relating to the
interconnected themes of earth, justice and peace. All of the gravest issues our society and environment can be related to this triad of subjects, and this event will bring together a diverse number of very skilled artists.

Over 80 artists, writers and performers will converge on Fountain
Square to deliver their creative and urgent messages on Saturday, June 30, in this free event taking place from 10 am until 6pm. Artists will be spread throughout the Fountain Square area, and a main stage will feature musical acts throughout the day, along with an open drum circle at 3pm and an open mic at 4pm. (It will be moved to the Wheeler Arts building in case of rain.)

Later that evening, Radio Radio will host a benefit concert for the
Hoosier Environmental Council. The evening concert will start at 9pm, and entry is $5.

** Musical acts include: The blackSoil project (pure organic hip-hop), The Sarah Grain Trio (jazz and bossa nova-inspired folk), Men of Many Vices (bluegrass), Kate Lamont (of MabLab/ blueprintmusic), Twilight Sentinels (golden-age hip-hop), Bala vs. Laptop (electronic and African melody), Dance performance by Jaclyn Virgin, Megan Mills and Kevin Wiltz, DJ Spread.

Every year, media coverage of Burning Man gets it wrong. Scott G presents many myth-busting details about the annual celebration held the week before Labor Day on the Playa of Black Rock Desert, 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada.

Fiction: In the media, Burning Man is sometimes called an unstructured hippie event that plunges participants into a ritualistic freak show of mob-rule.
Fact: There are rules for safety. There is a city map. There is a plan. Within those self-imposed protective limits is an informal structure that encourages self-expression, participation, audience interaction, and the opportunity to achieve the poetry of the soul.

Fiction: Burning Man has been labeled pagan, secret, mystical and/or anti-Christian.
Fact: The Burning Man celebration is a carnival of life without concern for religious dogma or polemic.

Fact: While the first events took place during the summers of 1986-1990 at Baker Beach in San Francisco, the “gathering of the tribes” then moved to Black Rock Desert in Nevada where it has grown to encompass 39,000+ people.

Fiction: The location disturbs the local residents.
Fact: The Playa is an uninhabited part of the Nevada desert, 120 miles north of Reno and 12-15 miles from the towns of Gerlach and Empire, Nevada. Nearby residents tolerate or enjoy the colorful annual parade of participants; they certainly enjoy the estimated 10 million dollars the event pumps into the local economy. Further, the local
communities will be receiving donations of free solar power for their public buildings after the event.

Fiction: The date of the event is part of the planners’ covert ritual.
Fact: Burning Man is always the week leading up to and including Labor Day weekend. In 2007, the dates of the event are Monday, August 27 through Monday, September 3rd.

Fiction: Believers in supernatural phenomena take part in Burning Man.
Fact: They may, but the event itself is firmly rooted in reality.

Fact: That may be true for some participants, but the aim of Burning Man is to explore the possibilities of noncommercial communal living as well as the exploration of individual and group artworks on a daily basis.

Fiction: The event is sometimes compared to Woodstock, either the peaceful one in 1969, the more commercial version in 1994 or the one that got out of hand in 1999.
Fact: People who attend Burning Man make their own music as part of weeklong discoveries of self-expression.

Fact: The last rave at Burning Man was in 1996. As the variety of music on Burning Man Soundscapes demonstrates, all types of music are associated with the celebration, from pulsating trance to contemplative classical, and everything in between.

Fiction: Burning Man is a youth movement.
Fact: People of almost every age group participate in Burning Man.

Fiction: Burning Man is full of illegal drugs.
Fact: Your city will have far greater drug-related medical emergencies at the next legal rock concert than have ever occurred at Burning Man.

Fiction: Burning Man is somehow related to “The Wicker Man” films Films.
Fact: Oh come on, have you actually seen those movies Movies?

Fiction: Anarchists are behind the Burning Man event.
Fact: Perhaps this confusion comes from promoting radical self-expression, but participants experience freedom, not license. Don’t confuse the freedom to shout with the freedom to shout “fire” in a crowded theater.

Fact: Firearms are not allowed in Black Rock City, and there is a volunteer security team of several hundred people. There is also a long list of rules that are enforced for the good of the community and the safety of its members. There may be a lot of wild clothing Clothing, body paint, anti-mainstream art, and a great deal of music and/or noise, but the parking lots at many sports arenas are closer to the apocalypse than Burning Man.

Fiction: Burning Man is not good for the environment.
Fact: Each year, no trace of Black Rock City remains behind. The desert is left as it was found.

Fiction: Burning man is just an excuse to party.
Fact: While there is music, dancing, sculpting, painting, poetry, and communal interaction at Burning Man, the event is an ongoing social experiment. People may have fun, but the plans and goals are in line with creating a society that transcends the commonplace concerns of modern living.

Fiction: Burning Man is an attack on mass culture and consumer society.
Fact: Burning Man is an alternative to mass culture and consumer society.

many of you have enjoyed Harlen Gruber's "Diamond Portal" over the past few years. to help jog your memory the Diamond Portal always sat at 11:11 in deep space and combines sacred geometry, immersive environments, and user modulated sound installation to create an incredible sensory experience and, Harlan believes, a portal for the transformation of humanity.

the "Diamond Portal" has consistantly been a project i look forward to each year with mischeivous glee and has been the scene of several vaguely remembered crimes against mundanity. the site of the Diamond Portal burning amongst the ruins of the temple in 2005 is an image permanently branded on what's left of the good side of my brain.

this year Harlan has plans to make a much MUCH larger version of his portal, the Sapphire Portal. it will again include sacred geometry, immersive environments, and user modulated sound installation, but will be taking these elements to much greater plains.

unfortunately - unforgiveably, some might say - Harlan was over looked during the granting process (in their defense he was up against some brilliant competition - http://www.burningman.com/installations/07_art_fund.html - awesome right??) and is trying to fund the Sapphire Portal on his own dime and the dime of those willing to support him.

Burning Man takes on green tech

If you head to Burning Man this summer and see an 80-foot slug belching plumes of fire as it inches across the desert, don't worry: it's not an environmental disaster.

It's quite the opposite. The slug, named Mechabolic, will be converting the festival's garbage into clean energy as people walk around inside it to see the process in action. Artist Jim Mason's Mechabolic is a centerpiece of this year's Burning Man theme, "Green Man," which celebrates clean energy, green technology and environmental responsibility. The theme also provides an opportunity for organizers to show they are serious about using the festival to help make the world a better place.

Calling all Artists!

This is the official call for designs for the 2007 Burning Man
stickers that are passed out with the materials you receive at the
Greeters station in Black Rock City. (and other designs that appear
randomly in your hands at other points in time)

These stickers are two or three colors and can vary in size from
2.25" by 5.5" to 3" by 3" or 3" in diameter for a round design.
Please incorporate the name Burning Man and the year 2007 into your
design. These are two or three color stickers only so please design
accordingly. If at all possible, please post your design on a web
page and send the URL to Bex; otherwise send in an Adobe Illustrator
file to bex@burningman.com. Whether sending your design or questions,
please put "STICKER DESIGN" in the subject header. HEY, remember
there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme
- this year's theme is: The Green Man

We are also looking for designs for the 2007 car stickers. This

Hoop time! - Muncie

8pm to 9pm (or so)
Minnetrista Cultural Center...on the BIG green area out back.

I'll provide the hoops if you don't have one and may even have some for sale (ranging in price from $5 to $20), but don't feel you MUST buy one, I'll continue bringing hoops for others to use.

If it's been a rainy day just keep watch on the weather because if it clears up by 8pm I'll be out there with the hoops. Also, on the first day I'll try to give everyone a card with all my info on it.....just in case.

Obviously bring some water for drinking. You'll get thirsty and I don't want anyone dehydrating.

Wear clothes in which you'll feel comfortable.

If you're late, don't sweat it. If you're early....wait....I might be running late. I'm driving back into town from Gas City....where I work until 7pm....then running home to fill up the water bottle, change clothes, and maybe grab a snack.

Speaking of snacks...you may not want to be full when you hoop. Since the hoop rotates in the gastric area (stomach and abdomen) it may feel uncomfortable. Eat about an half hour before hooping......if you want. This is a personaly judgement call. It's all up to you.

To help support Burning Man 2007: The Green Man, and make Black Rock City the first 'carbon-neutral' city in the world, Cooling Man needs more hearts and hands. Please let us know if you'd like to help with this. Work on a project to indicate global warming- equivalent to one Christmas light per square meter across the planet 1 s mile of Christmas lights-in a ball that show heat. 1500 lights- (number I got) –check with Jeff Cole and see- Right now he needs help to-make a globe- it is a square meter heat project-

3.Resource Directories, wiki – ways to green the burn
Adding resources and insight on ways to Green the Burn. Which include but not limited to: Materials, energy, lighting, gray water, recycling, re-using/salvage, composting, waste, the 6 R's, burning’ and more...moving this information to the wiki (tech savvy people needed here!) and then getting this to the outreach team and the website team for the environmental section.

4.Communications, distribute information/ OUTREACH
Get the word out and updates on what is happening with greening Burning Man. Let people know where they can get involved, and share educational tidbits, and our resource directories with Burners around the world. You can also update the info for our wiki that will then lead into the Environmental section on the website. Help with our super sweet looking e-mail coming out, get this out to theme camps, participants, and your friends.

5.We will also have a 3,500 watt solar system ran lighting behind coffee bar, and some on the man base, we will need some help installing this. Efficient Energy solar was the company that supplied this and a month and 1/2 after the event these panels were powering people’s homes in Southern California. If we can get more than one company doing this, we can have multiple stations and more homes being solar powered! Power light is the company that is powering the man base. This is a great time to learn and contribute– however we can all gain a great deal by working together like this.

6.Composting
This is composting opportunity is for the ranch from the commissary (there place that feeds the staff). No for individuals or camps. One step at a time. We’re all here to learn new things and make things happen. Andy Man is a Resource and is down to help wit composting- their company can’t do anything- however he will help with signs and more. Our board members are into it, one even is researching more including mushroom composting and more- all loosing at this being a stream of revenue and decrease coast of hauling food waste away as trash. Goal: this can be an addition income stream, or can be a giant labyrinth. The neighboring ranch sometimes uses human waste.

7.Workshops and Coordination
Host workshops and/or coordinate the workshops before the burn and on-playa. You can do this anywhere... if you are in San Francisco you can use the Burning Man headquarters. If you live somewhere else we can help connect you to your regional rep. The workshops coordination involves scheduling and getting people involved in places to learn more about greening principals and the 6 R’s (Respect, rethink, reduce, re-use, recycle, restore). Coordinating logistics and people with ideas to make the workshops happen.

8.Transportation & Clean Fuels
Organize clean fuels transportation on and off the playa, and share this information with our education and resources information. Help organize transportation for the Burn... to and from the Play to Reno, the Airport, etc.

10.Chlorophyll Collective – help ‘em out!
The Chlorophyll Collective is creating a "greenhouse gas capture and sequestration from a generator's exhaust by photosynthetic organisms." They will show how algae can be used to "green" exhaust emissions from combustion-based power generators on or off the playa. Bio-diesel fueled is best for many reasons… however any kind will work with this project.
They have come up with a list of materials and costs, some of the key items are blower, high-pressure water pump, etc. to be donated-
something that the BM network might be able to help us accomplish this??
This list needs to get into the hands of industrial scrap folk who can help us get these materials for free or cheap.

3. Bring in something to make bio-disel reactor-kiosk to show how it works. –everyday from 3-5 bring cooking oil and out comes fuel.
4. Who has an amazing display that talks about how biodiesel works?
5. Talk about Bio-diesel! A woman named Margot is making biodiesel, we'd appreciate a volunteer who is smart who can talk to her about her display. Envision aesthetic framework- Make it fun, do a song and dance!!

This includes evaporation practices as well. please, work with Sarah directly on this. I'm sure she'd love to hear your ideas. Let's make sure that we are giving consistent information to participants about grey water options.

14.Baseline Environmental Report on Burning Man

Thank you to everyone working hard to make the following theme camps happen!!!

The Ka-tet (Earth Guardian Base Camp): We are a group of friends brought together to create a camp of fun and openess. We will have a participation dome with games tounaments during the day and projection art at night. It will be very interactive and will even have times for other people to present their art.

The Laser Dome: In a nut shell our camp is a psychodelic laser experiance contained within a 42' diameter 5/8 geodesic dome, with a 18x20 tent enterance. Inside the dome is a 7000 watt sound system, with 8 medium powered red & green lasers, and other intelligent lighting. Our dj's provide a healthy mix of trance, house, breaks, and hip-hop. Also every day at dusk we project psychodelic movies inside the dome during what we call Cryptik Theater.

Hum 'n Hug North: Wander into our realm where a gazillion musical instruments are everywhere waiting to be picked up and played, waiting to have strains of music of many sorts coaxed out of them. Jamming. Consorting. Communing. Fun. Come play - come jam - come hug! Originally started at Transformus, the Southeast Regional Burn, the Ohio contingent of the group looks forward to being a part of Scorched Nuts!

Camp Happy Hour: It's always Happy Hour with us! We provide concoctions of all varietys to quench your thirst. We have a comfy chill space, a little bit of lawn art, and tons of fun!

Tribal Belly Dance Camp: Fun, Funky & Powerful tribal belly dancing. Including workshops and performances!

Blinky Blinky Blinky: I've done a bunch of art on the Playa, The L2K ring, the L3K ring last year, and the hypknowtrons. I'll bring the hypknowtrons and set up some very nice blinky art.

Camp Pornyata: An adult themed camp bringing gifts of spanking open pornyata's to recieve adult toys, gifts ect. 18 and over only.

Radical Faerie Camp: We are a mixed gender queer group of folks that would love to create queer safe space at the gathering.

Call for Art - the Greenhouse Project

The intention of this work is to recognize and embrace the natural cycles of life, to arrange
our lives in collaboration with natural cycles, and in doing so, we can grow a greener, more
sustainable, integrated, and meaningful experience of our world. The Greenhouse Project
is intended to be an encounter that serves to reconnect and reawaken the participants to
take an active part in the universal, cyclical cycles of life. Through interaction, reflection,
and co-creation, the participants come to encounter themselves as part of the movement of
the Universe. When we awaken to the fact that we are collaborators with nature, we are
more effective in initiating and sustaining beneficial change in our world.

How can you get involved?

Contribute a 4-5 part series or a single piece of art in any medium, and spread the word!
I'm looking for any work that illustrates a natural process, however specifically or broadly
construed. The art could honor the elements, the seasons, any natural cycle involving
plants, water/rain, fire, etc., cycles of life, birth, and death, the passing of time, growth and
decay. Series in all mediums encouraged – paintings, sculptures, photographs, masks,
poems, found objects, natural things (rocks, flowers, plants, feathers) etc. Feel free to run
with it, cuddle with it, expand it, contract it, turn it upside down, inside out, tie it up, set it
free, whatever pleases you the most.

Art contributions made from recycled, reused, and natural materials are highly encouraged.

Other stuff needed:
exotic/tribal fabrics, sheer fabrics/scarves, prayer flags, extension cords, wind chimes, plant
pots, decorative containers, rocks, dried herbs, candles, candleholders, offering bowls,
bells, mirrors, christmas lights, el-wire, and any other miscellaneous items that fit with the
concept and spirit of the project.

Contribute NOW, in time for Flipside (http://www.burningflipside.com), or after
that, for Bonnaroo and Rainbow Gathering, or even after that,
for Burning Man (http://www.burningman.com). Play along at home and become a part of
the (r)evolution of this installation in its various incarnations. Stay tuned for a slideshow of

Indianapolis Spin Jams!

Hey folks-

Starting a new thread in hopes this news won't get buried. After a little bit of browbeating to remind him of all the people he's helped and hosted over the years, and how they'd likely want to return the favor, Hagey says " I'm now willing to accept help, and let's face it, I could use a little."

The need is big: The fires cooked both his RVs, which were stuffed with all the gear used by campers passing through. All those blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, tents used by the Hostel are crispy, charred cinders. background info here:

Greening the Man

In 2007, we will calculate the amount of climate changing gases that are
released into the air by the construction and the burning of the Man and its
pedestal. This is called a carbon footprint. Then we'll sponsor projects in
the outside world that will efface this imprint. Such actions might include
the planting of trees or the development of non-polluting energy resources.
Having played with fire, we'll take care to cleanse its atmospheric
playground.

We are taking some radical measures to ensure that Black Rock City will be
the largest "Green" community in the world. These steps will all be covered
soon in more detail but this is the outline.

1. A Vehicle free Playa.
No gas powered vehicles will be parked within the perimeter of Black Rock
City. We will have an adjacent parking area approximately a quarter of a
mile away. Cars and trucks will be able to unload at camp but then must
park in the lot. Those choosing to come in RVs will have a separate RV lot
to park in. We will also be operating a number of bio-diesel fueled buses to
bring you and your equipment from the parking area to your camps. Art Cars
will not be affected by this.

2. People are the Power.
Another step we are taking is a power grid for all of Burningman. We will
not be allowing generators this year unless they run on bio-diesel or a
solar source. We will be providing a solar power grid for Burningman
assisted by a "power plant" run by the power of Burningman attendees. We
will have bicycles and "hamster wheels" that YOU will use to power all of
Burningman. We are still working out how access to the grid will be
provided and details will be given soon.

3. "Burning Potties"
We have reached a deal with Incinolet http://incinolet.com/ to use their new
waste system that uses a powerful heater and blower to reduce your human
waste into ash. We will provide participants with plenty of ash bags.

By starting with these simple steps we will continue to ensure that
Burningman is a proving ground for a better society.

2. We are now offering Scholarship ($15) tickets!!!
2. We are now offering Bed Rentals in the bunk houses for additional $30! Most Bunkhouses have 10--25 beds and have a private bathroom(s) with shower(s)!!!!
3. We are now allowing RV's limited to 8 and there is a $15 fee (Campground charges extra for RV's)

Scorched Nuts WOrk Weekend

Hello everyone we are looking for volunteers to help get the camp ground ready for SN 2007. Things we will be doing is mapping out theme camps and the cities set up, Cleaning up the facility, clearing an area for the Laser Dome!, and getting to know your fellow volunteers... their will be a party saturday night! If you plan to stay over night, it cost $10 to stay in a cabin. I will find out if the campground will charge for people to camp. You must RSVP by April 1st if you plan to come. We will figure out the meals situation when we know how many people are coming the site has an idustrial kitchen so we should be able to cook. It will probally be some combo of potluck and provided food!

Introduction to Turkish Rom with Amani Ali!
Amani Ali, of Goshen, IN, is an accomplished choreographer, teacher and performer of
Oriental Dance. Originally hailing from the Washington D.C. area, where she had extensive
training and experience in classical ballet, she later went on to study the culture and
dances of the Middle East under the tutelage of her mentor and friend, artist Leila
Gamal. In addition to studies with many other top international teachers, Amani
eventually became a soloist on the dance circuit, as well as a member of Leila’s “Troupe
El Amiraat”. She is currently an area instructor and artistic director of her own group of
student dancers, “Raqs Shuvani”.

Early on in her career in Oriental Dance, Amani fell in love with the “Roman” (Gypsy)
style of dance with its intricate rhythms and energetic music. She began studies with the
best of the genre: Elizabeth Artemis Mourat; Eva Cernik; and Dalia Carella. She has taken
her style and her career, as well as her troupe, “down the Romany Trail”.

Amani was honored by Artemis in 2004 to be named one of the top five of the new
generation of Turkish dancers in the U.S., and was interviewed by Artemis for an article
on this subject for “Zaghareet!” magazine. Now that there is growing interest in Romany
dance, Amani looks forward to any opportunity to pass on what she has learned and hopes
to both promote and preserve the unique spirit and rich heritage of the Rom people.

Recompression is an annual gathering hosted by the Burning Man Vancouver community. We are inspired by, and share values with, Burning Man. We create a Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ) that we, as participants, share responsibility for building. Our community experience features a Burn celebration, music, art, performance, workshops, theme cabins, fire-spinning, ritual, gift-giving, experiential communication and friendship. We celebrate Recompression in an oceanside rain forest setting on British Columbia's beautiful Sunshine Coast. We are an active, friendly and diverse community, and we've always warmly welcomed Burners and other like-minded folk from around the world. Include yourself, include others!

Okay, we admit it: Recompression is "Burner Club Med" - all food is included in the ticket price, plus accomodation in heated cabins! It's Canada, and it's April - it's cold! Not so much "Radical Self Reliance" - more like "Radical Self Indulgence." Admittedly the bunks in the cabins are designed for kids (It's aYMCA summer camp) but they do have heat. Capacity is only 275 people, so act fast.

So, here's the deal, right now there are three definite camp members and one maybe. Not a lot of people, but there's still time to plot and plan. So, this year we're working on a camp that will consist of a double dome design (one dome for the public and one for our private camp use with a fire barrell....which would heat the public dome during the evening), a stage for performances of any kind (if you want to contribute a poem, a dance, a play, etc....do, do, do it), and at least one effigy contribution (we're workin' on designs and procession plans at this time). Now, if you're wanting/planning/hoping to go and would like to camp with others from the upper midwest/great lakes area, just let me know. Also, if you want to contribute to any of the above projects, again, let me know....same with questions, comments, and critiques. Oh....and if you want to stay with us, but aren't able to be there the whole time....don't worry one bit about it...we'll make sure that you have a space to call your own.

Coyote of DPW needs help

Coyote, one of the people responsible for helping plan and map out
BRC, was jumped by a street gang in SF in early February and severely
beaten. Among his many injuries, he was left with a broken jaw that
needs reconstructive surgery.

The DPW is asking for donations of $2.00 to $10.00 to help him - an
appropriate amount since he's the one who surveys 2:00 to 10:00 of
city, flags it and then runs the DPW teams from August until BLM
clean-up inspection (which was passed this past year in large part due
to him).

If you can help, Will Roger, aka Mr. Klean, has set-up a paypal fund
to help him with medical expenses and lost income.
